The ionic and hydrophilic nature of the amino acids precludes their isolation from biological fluids by solvent/solvent extraction. Modification of the amino group, for example the formation of an N-acetyl group, makes solvent extraction accessible. 

If the solute is uniformly distributed through the soHd phase the material near the surface dissolves first to leave a porous stmcture in the soHd residue. In order to reach further solute the solvent has to penetrate this outer porous region the process becomes progressively more difficult and the rate of extraction decreases. If the solute forms a large proportion of the volume of the original particle, its removal can destroy the stmcture of the particle which may cmmble away, and further solute maybe easily accessed by solvent. In such cases the extraction rate does not fall as rapidly. 

Synthesis. In contrast to pituitary hormones, which usually can be obtained in pure form only after extraction from animal tissues, brain oligopeptides are readily available because of their small size. The synthetic repHca represents the most economical and readily accessible source for the oligopeptides. Two techniques are available for laboratory synthesis of oligopeptides, ie, solution chemistry and soHd-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS).

Other technique—for example, dynamic secondary ion mass spectrometry or forward recoil spectrometry—that rely on mass differences can use the same type of substitution to provide contrast. Unless they are toxic or odorous fumes can normally be simply exhausted into the atmosphere at a suitable location well away from anywhere with normal personnel access. 

This value does not express the actual result since side and/or parallel reactions (e.g., H+ or 02 reduction) are not considered, but it does demonstrate the completeness of the cementation process and the effectiveness of this liquid-liquid extraction. During this extraction no external current flows through the phase boundary Hg (amalgam)/solution thereby establishing a potentiometric condition. The question of the potential difference at the phase boundary can be answered by constructing the experimentally accessible current-voltage curves for the reactions ... 

This review focuses on the structural stability of transition metal oxides to lithium insertion/extraction rather than on their electrochemical performance. The reader should refer to cited publications to access relevant electrochemical data. Because of the vast number of papers on lithium metal oxides that have been published since the 1970s, only a selected list of references has been provided.
