This difference in potentials can be reduced by complexing Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions in the solution. The preferred complexing agent is the CN- ion. In a solution containing CN- ions (NaCN, KaCN), the concentration of Cu2+ is reduced much more than that of Zn2+ because of the difference in the dissociation constant of the cyanide complex.
