This section explains the special terms used in the handbook, gives the sources of specific items, and includes [Pg.23]

The expression Not Pertinent means that the data item either has no real meaning (such as the flash point of a inflammable chemical) or is not required for assessing a hazardous situation. The expression Data Not Available means that the information sought was not found in the general data sources consulted during the preparation of this handbook. In a few cases where important data were not available, values were estimated by usually reliable procedures all such values are labeled (est.) . If more accurate values for those items are found, they will be included in later revisions. [Pg.23]

In every case of a discharge or leak, it is obvious that an effort should be made to reduce, stop, or contain the flow of material at its source if this can be done safely. The purpose of the terms used in this section is to describe in a general way the cautionary and corrective responses that are well recognized by trained emergency response personnel. [Pg.23]

Synonyms —Alternative systematic chemical names and commonly u.sed trivial names are given. Commercial or trade names are shown in a few cases where they are in common use. An index of synonyms is included in this handbook (Chapter 3) it includes mostly those names given in Chapters 4 and 5. [Pg.24]

Chemical Compatibility Classification — The U.S. Coast Guard defines 43 cargo groups listed in Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular No. 4-75, Guide to Compatibility of Chemicals . Appropriate parts of the Guide are included in this handbook, primarily in Chapter 3. [Pg.24]

Definitions Section TypicaUy, a FMEA report wUl contain phrases or words that are seldom associated with the everyday practice of the industrial safety professional. It is therefore important to provide definitions and explanations of terms and phrases that will be utilized in the FMEA. [Pg.116]

Adhesion is a subject with many important practical applications. The practical properties of an adhesive bond are a consequence of the bonding between the atoms and molecules involved (Adhesion fundamental and practical). Much of the theory of adhesion that can give an insight of practical importance makes use of concepts used in chemistry when discussing bonding between atoms and molecules.
