Various potential treatments have been examined experimentally (reviewed by Fricke and Poppenga, 1989). The only treatments that have shown some success are orally administered activated charcoal (an adsorbent), steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (supportive treatment), and monoclonal antibodies. As we have stated, the amount of experimental data on Ce compounds had already reached the critical mass to allow us, at present, to correlate some apparently independent systems. However, as the experimental information grows, the need for a more thorough condensation of the information becomes apparent. In that sense we see that the literature is richer in theoretical reviews (see, e.g., Newns and Read 1987, Fulde 1988, Schlottmann 1989) than in experimental ones. It is therefore necessary to have more experimental reviews concerning, e.g., the magnetic and transport properties, in order to increase the applications of the theoretical models to real systems.

A detailed experimental review on this subject can be found in Lawrence et al. (1981). One of the most frequently used methods to determine a mixed-valent compound and its valency is a lattice constant measurement. This technique assumes the validity of Vegard s law, i.e., the linearity between lattice constant and valence, as well as knowledge of the lattice constants aQ( ) and ao(n - 1) of compounds where the rare earth is in the configurations 41 and 4f , respectively. In this way the intermediate valency of Ce compounds (a-Ce, CeBcij, CePd), of Sm compounds (SmS, SmBg), of Tm compounds (TmSe) and of Yb compounds (YbAlj) was determined [see Lawrence et al. (1981) and Penney (1984)].
