When you are truly stuck, try the Help/Search Excel Help. You can type in a question and it will alert you to several possible answers related to your question. This usually leads you to the answer you want.

The H-NMR spectra of all 1.1-carbo or l.l-hetero-X -phosphorins show a doublet between 5 = 7,5 and 8 = 8,5 ppm with/p c-c-H = 30 to 50 Hz which is due to the protons at C-3 and C-5 of the phosphorin ring. The low-field signals usually appear somewhat lower than those of X -phosphorins. The position of these signals suggests the existence of a ring current induced by the aromatic X -phosphorin system. However, the vinyl protons of X -phospha-cyclohexadiene -2,5 or -2,4 derivatives also absorb at relative low fields (p. 135). Much more characteristic are the P—H coupling constants, which are about six times as large in X -phosphorins as in X -phosphorins (/p c c-H = 5—7 Hz). Indeed, they provide an excellent help in the identification of X -phosphorins.

Describe the use of the following Excel functions after reading about them in the Excel help facility. 

Use the Excel help facility to look up the use of the COUNT function. Use the function to determine the number of data in each column of the spreadsheet of Figure 3-7. The count function is quite useful for determining the number of data entered into a given area of a spreadsheet. 

Similarly, in Excel 5 and 95, Help gets you to Microsoft Excel Help Topics and to the Answer Wizard. Click on either one, and you will see four tabs Contents, Index, Find, and Answer Wizard. When you select the Answer Wizard, type data analysis in the top window, then select an appropriate item from the list that appears in window 2. In this example, select Tell Me About Analyzing Statistics . Or you type analysis toolpak , and find How Do f Enable the Analysis ToolPak . Even How Do I Use the Analysis ToolPak will get you to the installation instructions.

Answer Manual calculations for the t-test are laborious and prone to error. The best way to work such problems is with Excel, as shown in the accompanying figure. The feature used is imder "Data Analyrsis," foimd in the "Tools" menu. This analysis pack is provided with Excel, although it has to be installed as an add-in.
