Under Cs bombardment the matrix effect can be significantly reduced by using the MCs" ion signals for quantification of species M. The detection limit is increased, i.e. the detection power deteriorates, by two or more orders of magnitude, but sometimes even standard-free quantification has been reported [3.51]. MCs" ions have high masses this is a disadvantage because many mass interferences occur in this mass range. 

This option assumes a comparable or even standard placebo response rate for historical data and the current trial. The historical improvement rate (on placebo or without any treatment) is then used for purposes of comparison with results of subsequent non-placebo-controlled studies involving the same investigator and protocol design but different drugs. For historical placebo response data it is recommended that a small placebo treatment arm is used for safety data purposes and to avoid observer bias although this proposal may resolve or diminish some ethical concerns, it raises a number of scientific problems ... 

A frequent source of error is poor standards. Besides the obvious error of standards being wrongly made, it should not be forgotten that trace metal standards are unstable. Concentrations of 10 pg cm and less usually need to be prepared daily. Even standards purchased from commercial suppliers will age and this is especially true when chemical changes can be expected in the analyte (e.g. silicon). 

Even standard methods of test often allow alternative test pieces or procedures and these may not yield equivalent results. Hence, it is important to clearly define which procedure has been followed and, when a standard has been used, to identify any deviations made from the set procedure. Test procedure requires careful attention to detail as small, apparently innocent changes can produce significant deviation in results. Equally, it is essential that that test conditions are accurately set and maintained, which is really just one aspect of quality control considered in more detail in Section 7. 

Surface or interfacial tension measurements offer one possibility of verifying the absence of impurities at interfaces. First, measured values should not change with time (provided the fast surface rearrangements discussed in sec, 1.14a are fully relaxed). Second, the absolute values should agree with standard data, where available. The latter argument is not fully unambiguous because the conditions under which the experiment was carried out may have played a role (the tension may depend on the nature of the gas applied to obtain a given pressure) and even standard data may be subject to improvement. None of these official standards have ever been specific enough to be free from interpretative differences. As a consequence, to avoid embarrassment, to harmonize, and to educate, a number of voluntary and semiofficial bodies have over the years published Best Practice, Recommendations, Guidelines, and even standards for the manufacture of sterile products. Many of these have been referred to in earlier chapters. 

For the aforementioned reasons there is, so far, no generally accepted or even standardized approach for defining the chemical space of QSAR models, and there are no reasons to expect that one method is the absolute best. However, given this uncertainty, AD is used to make the decision as to whether or not a QSAR prediction should be more or less reliable. This is a crucial and hot topic, and was dealt with at a JRC workshop, where several different approaches for linear and non-linear models were proposed in relation to different model typologies it is the topic of various publications. ... 

In the past, the use of proven research technology was sufficient to approve most research and routine experiments did not receive the scrutiny that new experiments did. In the last few years, the NRC has required the investigators to formally review even standard procedures for possible hazards, to establish procedures to prevent these potential hazards from occurring, and to develop a response protocol. Worst case failure modes must be reviewed. It is enlightening to see the results of these analyses. It is frequently found that there is far more potential for failure than most would anticipate. The committee must review and approve of these hazard analyses. 

Even then it can be solved only numerically, but for this appropriate integration procedures and even standard routine programs are available. The model as well as its solutions can be applied to downward as well as upward concurrent operation by using the appropriate parameter values. In case of a solid catalyzed reaction, however, an additional effect of the feed concentration must be taken into account, mainly at small Damkohler numbers, since the physico-chemical equilibrium of reactants in liquid phase is not necessarily attained at the inlet.
