Alkyl halides have contributed to human health through their use as insecticides. Since antiquity, people have died from famine and disease caused or carried by mosquitoes, fleas, lice, and other vermin. The black death of the Middle Ages wiped out nearly a third of the population of Europe through infection by the flea-borne bubonic plague. Whole regions of Africa and tropical America were uninhabited and unexplored because people could not survive insect-borne diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and sleeping sickness. 

Although polyester film, introduced by Du Pont under the trade name Mylar in the 1960s, has been added to the traditional supports like paper and cellulose acetate, the principle of photographic film preparation has remained unchanged since daguerreotype was developed. The sensitive surface always contains a silver halide crystal emulsion with a gelatin binder. Despite all the efforts to replace them, silver salts remain the basis of these emulsions, and film manufacturers still require gelatin, which they consume at the rate of 20,000 tons a year. The suppliers are few, and they are carefully selected. The world leader in this area is Rousselot, now a subsidiary of Sanofi Elf Aquitaine, with four units in Europe and one in the United States. 

Because the confirmatory study also represents "worst-case" conditions, there should be few chances that an unstable product is not discovered. Examples of sources currently used by the pharmaceutical industry are xenon- and metal halide lamps (Option 1), artificial- and full spectrum daylight fluorescent tubes (Option 1), white fluorescent- and near UV-fluorescent tubes (Option 2). In (Northern) Europe (e.g., Scandinavia, England, and Germany), it seems that Option 1 with the xenon lamp is the preferred source.

The different behavior of [V(0)(acac)2] in comparison to [Co(acac)2 (N02)2] , and especially acac displacement by nucleic acid bases with NH groups also emphasizes the different chemistry involved [118]. The reactivity of )8-diketonate complexes is indeed relevant due to the demonstrated antitumour activity of the benzoylacetonato (complexes [TiX2(Bzacac)2] (X = halide, OR) (119). Indeed, one complex from this new series of Ti complexes, budotitane diethoxybis(l-phenylbutane-l,3-dionato)titanium(IV), X = OEt is receiving limited clinical trials in Europe.
