EUCOMED

This item very briefly sums up a recently-published report from EUCOMED (the European medical device industry trade association) on the use of ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) as a plasticiser in PVC medical products, and the risks associated therewith.

Nakazato et al. (284) determined the CF and geniposidic acid content in leaves of Eucom-mia ulmoides used in health foods and beverages. The samples (dried leaves or granules) were refluxed with water, filtered, acidified, and cleaned up on aMegaBondElut Cl8 cartridge linked to an Elut SAX cartridge. The eluate (with MeOH-Tris hydrochloride buffer) was applied to a Inertsil ODS-2 column at 40°C and eluted with an ACN-phosphate solution mixture. Detection was performed at 240 nm, reaching a DL of 10 fig/g.

Amongst all differences in competitiveness between the US and Europe, the most prominent is the relative lack of willingness in Europe to take business risks for fear of failure. In a recent survey among the members of Eucomed, the European association of the medical technology industry, 96% of the respondents acknowledged this fear [8]. Two main factors seem to drive this gap a cultural aversion to risk, and the lack of venture capital in Europe.

An attempt to determine the absolute stereochemistry of natural eucomol (10) by chemical degradation to a product of known chirality led to a series of new transformations (64). It was anticipated that reduction of (10) to the deoxo derivative (58) followed by oxidative cleavage of ring A would lead to the lactone (59). From this intermediate the key compound (61) should be obtained by subsequent reduction. The derivative (61) is easily prepared from eucomic acid (60) whose absolute stereochemistry has been elucidated recently (34, 36).
