Four different types of solvents were used in this work. The structural formulas of the solvents are given in Fig. 24.1 from left to right for acetone, ethanol, A-methyl-2-pyrrolidon (NMP), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Industrial poisoning. The production of silicone products uses substances harmful for human health. These are inorganic substances (ammonia, chlorine, sodium and potassium hydroxides, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, hydrogen chloride) and organic compounds of various types, such as hydrocarbons (methane, benzene and its homologues), chlorine derivatives (methyl- and ethylchloride, chlorobenzene), alcohols (methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, hydrosite), acetone, pyridine, etc. The information about their toxicity, explosion hazard, effect on human body, as well as maximum allowable concentrations of gases and vapours in the air at workplace can be found in special references.(Ryabov 1970). Brett flavor in wine The question still remains what is "Brett" flavor Results from our initial work indicates that "Brett" aroma in wine is a complex mixture of odor-active compounds, including acids, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, and phenolics. Analysis by gas chromatography-olfactometry revealed two predominate odor-active compounds responsible for the Brett flavor in the wines studied isovaleric acid and a second unknown compound other identified odor-active compounds included 2-phenyl ethanol, isoamyl alcohol, cis-2-nonenal, trans-2-nonenal, B-damascenone, ethyl decanoate, guaiacol, 4-ethyl guaiacol, 4-ethyl phenol. Our findings are a snapshot into the much larger picture know as Brett flavor. Ultimately this preliminary investigation requires the descriptive analyses of many more wines to know what odor active compounds describe the flavor know as "Brett". [Pg.107]

According to the description by Couture et al., a blend AEM refers to the blending of a water-solnble polymer, which acts as a matrix, and a hydroxide salt, while in some cases, one or more plasticizers can be added to the blend. So far, most of the blend AEM materials are based on nonaromatic polymer blends, such as poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(ethylene oxide), and blends with potassium hydroxide or l-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide. The typical constituents are cinnamic alcohol and esters of cinnamic acid, such as methyl and ethyl cinnamate. Styrax oil, steam-distilled from styrax balsam, is a pale yellow to almost water-white viscous liquid with a similar odor profile to s., except for greater diffusion and a more floral-spicy note.
