Ethyl acetate and d, Limonene

Barrier properties to organic vapors in PLA have barely been investigated. Permeability to water and few organic compounds is reported in the literature. This section will present the barrier of PLA to water, and those organic compounds already studied in the literatures which are ethyl acetate and D-limonene. As PLA polymers become more commonly used, many other permeants are expected to be assessed. [Pg.357]

The more recent studies. Flora et al. (24), identified several constituents of muscadine grape essence using gas-liquid chromatography in conjunction with mass spectrometry and infrared spectrometry. Components identified included methanol, ethanol, n-butanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol, n-hexanal, trans-2-hexene-l-al, B-phenylethanol, acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, ethyl propionate, propyl acetate, butyl acetate, ethyl caprate, benzyl acetate, toluene, m-xylene, and d-limonene. [Pg.25]

Ethyl acetate is a solvent found in nature and is environmentally safe and acceptable for food applications. For instance, it is used in the packaging industry because it provides high printing resolution on plastics and metals. D-Limonene is a major compound found in oil extracted from citrus and is present in orange and fruit juices. It is also used in cleaning products as a solvent or a water dilutable product. It is a very versatile chemical and therefore used in a wide variety of applications. Scalping of D-limonene from... [Pg.359]

The key literature on this subject [42] shows that d-limonene, for example, has a relatively large distance (8.8). Therefore, its solubility in the surface layer is relatively small and the rate of diffusion wiU be low. It is also a relatively large, branched molecule, giving it a low diffusion coefficient. Ethyl acetate is somewhat closer (7.5) but would still be expected to be a relatively poor diffuser, though being a smaller molecule it would be expected to be somewhat faster than D-limonene. Other work shows, as would be... [Pg.91]
