Ethics professional responsibility

Industry relationships with healthcare professionals must support, and be consistent with, the professional responsibilities that healthcare professionals have towards their patients. Pharmaceutical companies must maintain high ethical standards when conducting promotional activities and comply with applicable legal, regulatory and professional requirements. Through the promotion of this code, IFPMA seeks to ensure that ethical promotional practices are established worldwide. 

In performing its activities, the companies shall not damage the image of competing companies or their products. The companies, which must issue specific internal directives for their staff, shall also be ethically and professionally responsible for the behaviour of their staff when engaged on corporate business. 

If local institutions receive any federal research money, all human research must be approved by the IRB. This is not the basis for IRB review but provides the incentive for local institutions to conduct studies that are ethical. The committee becomes involved in matters such as confidentiality, anonymity, and moral issues related to experimental activities. Approval from an IRB, however, does not relieve the principal investigator from the basic responsibility of safeguarding the health and welfare of participating individuals. This is a moral and professional responsibility that cannot be delegated. 

Within this book one will find the scientific foundation for the essential knowledge required of one who may aspire to specialty practice as a pharmacotherapist. As is the case with any such publication, its usefulness to the practitioner or the future practitioner is limited to providing such a foundation. To be socially and professionally responsible in practice, the pharmacotherapist s foundation must be continually supplemented and complemented by the flow of information appearing in the primary literature. Of course this is not unique to the general or specialty practice of pharmacy it is essential to the fulflllment of obligations to clients in any occupation operating under the code of professional ethics.

ADR reporting may be either voluntary or obligatory. Spontaneous reporting by health professionals is often favoured, since it is very difficult to make reporting compulsory. But in many countries, considerations of ethical responsibility and/or technical expediency have inclined governments to make reporting mandatory for the holders of marketing authorizations.
