Estrogens estrogen preparations

Many systemically administered estrogen products are available in the United States, but conjugated equine estrogens (CEEs), prepared from the urine of pregnant mares, is the most widely prescribed. Transdermal estrogen preparations are also available and usually are prescribed for patients who experience adverse effects, elevated triglycerides, or liver function abnormalities while taking an oral product. Transdermal preparations also have a lower incidence of venous thromboembolism than oral preparations.9... [Pg.769]

Estrogen preparations. Depot preparations for i.m. injection are oily solutions of esters of estradiol (3- or 17-OH group). The hydrophobicity of the acyl moiety determines the rate of absorption, hence the duration of effect... [Pg.254]

The estrogen preparations are basically divided into three groups natural steroids, semisynthetic steroids, and nonsteroidal chemical compounds possessing estrogenic activities (Table 61.4). Trans-dermal estrogen (Estraderm) equals the efficacy of the oral preparation. [Pg.563]

Adverse effects. After long-term intake of estrogen/progestin preparations, increased risks have been reported for breast cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, and thromboembolism. Although the incidence of bone fractures also decreases, the risk-benefit relationship is unfavorable. Concerning the adverse effects of oral contraceptives, see p. 252. 2005 Thieme and conditions of license. [Pg.250]

Oral contraceptives during chronic administration decrease dieophylline Cl by approximately 30% via inhibition of CYP isoenzymes. The effect may be less with low-estrogen preparations. [Pg.216]

Theophylline dose should be reduced by 30% and serum concentrations measured after 5 days of concurrent dierapy. Low-estrogen-containing preparations should be preferred if clinically justifiable. [Pg.216]
