Many systemically administered estrogen products are available in the United States, but conjugated equine estrogens (CEEs), prepared from the urine of pregnant mares, is the most widely prescribed. Transdermal estrogen preparations are also available and usually are prescribed for patients who experience adverse effects, elevated triglycerides, or liver function abnormalities while taking an oral product. Transdermal preparations also have a lower incidence of venous thromboembolism than oral preparations.9... 

Estrogen preparations. Depot preparations for i.m. injection are oily solutions of esters of estradiol (3- or 17-OH group). The hydrophobicity of the acyl moiety determines the rate of absorption, hence the duration of effect... 

Progesterone causes proliferation of acini in the breasts and with the help of estrogen, prepare them for lactation. 

The estrogen preparations are basically divided into three groups natural steroids, semisynthetic steroids, and nonsteroidal chemical compounds possessing estrogenic activities (Table 61.4). Trans-dermal estrogen (Estraderm) equals the efficacy of the oral preparation.

Premarin is an estrogen preparation that is sometimes prescribed to women at the time of the menopause as hormone replacement therapy. The name is derived from pregnant mare s urine, the source of the hormonal preparation. 

Goldzieher (1949) and Kountz (1950) observed the augumented vascularization also in the nasal mucosa and submucosa in women (no data for men are given), and in the skin in men and women. Testosterone ointment applied to the skin seemed to have some effect also, but in a much lower percentage of cases than the estrogen preparation. Effects on the vascularization of the heart and the great vessels are not reported (and this will hardly be possible) but there is no special reason to suggest that such effects do not occur.
