Stochastic Errors

There are a number of sources of uncertainty surrounding the results of economic assessments. One source relates to sampling error (stochastic uncertainty). The point estimates are the result of a single sample from a population. If we ran the experiment many times, we would expect the point estimates to vary. One approach to addressing this uncertainty is to construct confidence intervals both for the separate estimates of costs and effects as well as for the resulting cost-effectiveness ratio. A substantial literature has developed related to construction of confidence intervals for cost-effectiveness ratios. [Pg.51]

Questions often arise as to which mathematical treatments and instrument types perform optimally for a specific set of data. This is best addressed by saying that reasonable instrument and equation selection composes only a small quantity of the variance or error attributable to the NIR analytical technique for any application. Actually, the greatest error sources in any calibration are generally reference laboratory error (stochastic error source), repack error (nonhomogeneity of sample — stochastic error source), and nonrepresentative sampling in the learning set or calibration set population (undefined error). [Pg.129]

The two sources of stochasticity are conceptually and computationally quite distinct. In (A) we do not know the exact equations of motion and we solve instead phenomenological equations. There is no systematic way in which we can approach the exact equations of motion. For example, rarely in the Langevin approach the friction and the random force are extracted from a microscopic model. This makes it necessary to use a rather arbitrary selection of parameters, such as the amplitude of the random force or the friction coefficient. On the other hand, the equations in (B) are based on atomic information and it is the solution that is approximate. For ejcample, to compute a trajectory we make the ad-hoc assumption of a Gaussian distribution of numerical errors. CCF means different things to different people. Smith and Watson (1980) define CCF as the inability of multiple components to perform when needed to cause the loss of one or moi e systems. Virolainen (1984) criticizes some CCF analyses for including design errors and poor quality as CCF and points out that the phenomenological methods do not address physical and statistical dependencies. Here, CCF is classed as known deterministic coupling (KDC), known stochastic coupling (KSC), and unknown stochastic coupling (USC). [Pg.124]

The relative fluctuations in Monte Carlo simulations are of the order of magnitude where N is the total number of molecules in the simulation. The observed error in kinetic simulations is about 1-2% when lO molecules are used. In the computer calculations described by Schaad, the grids of the technique shown here are replaced by computer memory, so the capacity of the memory is one limit on the maximum number of molecules. Other programs for stochastic simulation make use of different routes of calculation, and the number of molecules is not a limitation. Enzyme kinetics and very complex oscillatory reactions have been modeled. These simulations are valuable for establishing whether a postulated kinetic scheme is reasonable, for examining the appearance of extrema or induction periods, applicability of the steady-state approximation, and so on. The quantities AUMC and AUSC can be regarded as the first and second statistical moments of the plasma concentration curve. These two moments have an equivalent in descriptive statistics, where they define the mean and variance, respectively, in the case of a stochastic distribution of frequencies (Section 3.2). The classical, frequentist approach in statistics requires the concept of the sampling distribution of an estimator. In classical statistics, a data set is commonly treated as a random sample from a population. Of course, in some situations the data actually have been collected according to a probability-sampling scheme. Whether that is the case or not, processes generating the data will be snbject to stochastic-ity and variation, which is a sonrce of uncertainty in nse of the data. Therefore, sampling concepts may be invoked in order to provide a model that accounts for the random processes, and that will lead to confidence intervals or standard errors. The population may or may not be conceived as a finite set of individnals. In some situations, such as when forecasting a fnture value, a continuous probability distribution plays the role of the popnlation. [Pg.37]

In chromatography the quantitative or qualitative information has to be extracted from the peak-shaped signal, generally superimposed on a background contaminated with noi%. Many, mostly semi-empirical, methods have been developed for relevant information extraction and for reduction of the influence of noise. Similar methods have been used to integrate thermodynamic properties of harmonic lattice vibrations over the spectral density of lattice vibration frequencies.21,34 Very accurate error bounds are obtained for properties like the heat capacity,34 using just the moments of the lattice vibrational frequency spectrum.35 These moments are known35 in terms of the force constants and masses and lattice type, so that one need not actually solve the lattice equations of motion to obtain thermodynamic properties of the lattice.
