Elevated Flares See Flares for a general definition. The elevated flare, by the use of steam injection and effective tip design, operates as a smokeless combustion device. Flaring generally is of low luminosity up to about 20 % of maximum flaring load. Steam injection tends to introduce a source of noise to the operation, and a compromise between smoke elimination and noise is usually necessary. When adequately elevated (by means of a stack) this type of flare displays the best dispersion characteristics for malodorous and toxic combustion products. Visual and noise pollution often creates nuisance problems. Capital and operating costs tend to be high, and an appreciable plant area can be rendered unavailable for plant operations and equipment because of excessive radiant heat. [Pg.528]

Figure 9 shows a load-change cycle which is typical for discontinuous SCF extraction. When the pressure release phase following completion of the extraction is considered, the question arises as to the true temperature course. It is wellknown that the pressure-dependent equilibrium temperature of CO2 falls to -79 C under atmospheric conditions. This relationship leads to short-term thermal stresses within the inner surfaces of the pressure vessel, particularly in the lower part where dry ice may form. There is an additional risk to the process that the charge may freeze within the pressure vessel. When designing equipment for the extraction of natural substances, definition of the non-stationary courses of pressure and temperature during pressure release is therefore of especial importance in the choice of materials and for the geometry of the pressure vessel. [Pg.488]

The operating speed characteristics of the process equipment dictate the type of motor and control to be applied. Most drives operate at a speed lower than that of the motor, thus requiring some form of speed reduction. The gearing may be via direct-cpnnected coupled motor or a speed reducer may be used. Membrane Process for Recovery of Alkanesulfonates. Many attempts have been made over the years to reduce the wastewater load—which represents a loss of product—by a number of different methods. These include evaporation, extraction, reverse osmosis, and ultrafiltration. All of these processes have the disadvantage of high equipment cost and high energy requirements, and the space-time yield is low. The washed negative plates are loaded in a pressure ehamber equipped with heaters. The latter cause the temperature of the plates to rise above the boiling point of water. The pressure chamber is equipped with a condenser unit where the water vapours are liquefied and drained out. When the pressure chamber is loaded with plates, a vacuum pump is turned on and, after a definite vacuum level is reached, the heaters are turned on, too. The plates are dried for quite a long time (20—24 h) and when no more water condense forms, heating is stopped and the coohng system is turned on.
