Range of speeds

Motor nd Drive. The preferred prime mover for a fan is usually an electric motor. Eor fans of low to moderate power, V-belt drives are frequently employed. This permits selection of fans that can be operated over a wide range of speeds rather than being limited to motor synchronous speeds. Furthermore, change of speed is less expensive with V-belt drives. However, fans requiring powerful motors, 37—75 kW (50—100 hp) and higher, are generally directly connected to the motor and driven at synchronous speed. 

This is an alternative to FOC and can provide a very fast response. The choice of a static drive, whether through a simple V7/control, field-oriented phasor control or direct torque control with open or closed-loop control and feedback schemes, would depend upon the size of the machine, the range of speed control (whether required to operate at very low speeds, 5% and below), the accuracy of speed control and the speed of correction (response time). The manufacturers of such drives will be the best guide for the most appropriate and economical drive for a particular application or process line. 

Avery wide range of. speed controls is available through this technology as it is possible to vary frequency on both sides ( ) of the rated frequency.

The driver is a prime mover capable of developing the required torque at a constant speed or over a range of speeds. The driver s energy source can be either electrical or mechanical. Electrical energy is used by motors, either of the induction or synchronous type, while the mechanical covers a multitude of sources. It may be a fuel, as in internal or external combustion engines, or it may be a gas, such as steam or process gas used in a turbine or expander. 

Mechanical means for controlled circulation of the solids slurry must be provided with at least a 3 1 range of speeds. The maximum peripheral speed of mixer blades should not exceed 6 ft/sec. 

In this apparatus the polymer melt is sheared between concentric cylinders. The torque required to rotate the inner cylinder over a range of speeds is recorded so that viscosity and strain rates may be calculated. 

The LIM has been used for propelling both wheel based vehicles and magnetically suspended vehicles over a veiy wide range of speeds. 

When using conventional induction motors the fixed-supply frequency and the number of field poles in the motor restrict the available range of speeds. It should be noted that, outside Europe, supply frequencies other than 50 Hz are used, resulting in induction motors operating at proportionally different speeds, and that this applies to all types of fan.

The molecules of all gases have a wide range of speeds. As the temperature increases, the root mean square speed and the range of speeds both increase. 

The basis of comparison is Similar log a v values and track surface stmctures for laboratory and road test conditions. As discussed under Section 26.3.6 side force measurements at constant slip angle and load over a suitable range of speeds and temperatures form a very good basis for comparison with road data. 

Direct current motors are used for continuous operation at constant load when fine speed adjustment and high starting torque are needed. A wide range of speed control is possible. They have some process applications with centrifugal and plunger pumps, conveyors, hoists, etc.
