The Bureau of Mines, Denver Research Center and the Department of Energy, Environmental Measurement Laboratory, developed through parallel efforts, two closely related techniques for the measurement of 218p0 (RaA) diffusion coefficient spectra. This work was prompted by reports in the past 5 years indicating that the diffusion coefficient of unattached 218Po may vary due to various physical and chemical factors in different environments. The diffusion coefficient is important because it affects the amount and site of 218Po deposition in the respiratory tract. 

According to the Federal Research in Progress Database, Perry and Tsao at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory are studying the chemical species and transport of thorium in soil. In other on-going projects, Krey et al. at Environmental Measurements Laboratory in New York are studying the daily intake of thorium, and Mclnroy et al. at Los Alamos National Laboratory are studying the tissue levels of thorium in the general population and occupationally exposed individuals.

To improve measurement capability of field laboratories, CENAM has also been offering a PT scheme, not only because there are few PT providers in Mexico, but also due to the need to promote traceable measurement by the use of reference value provided by CENAM. Following the successful implementation of a PT program for environmental measurement laboratory assessment made by authorities of three local governments [8], similar efforts have been made to promote among laboratories who could be considered in the future as reference laboratories in food, petrochemical, clinical [9] and industrial sectors. 

Vertical profiles of Rn, Pb, Bi, and Po were measured over the mid-continental United States by Moore et al. (1973). These results for Rn and Pb are shown in Figure 3. A number of surface sites have been locations for long-term studies of Pb in conjunction with the measurements of radionuclides from nuclear bomb testing by the Environmental Measurements Laboratory of the Department of Energy and its precursor, the Atomic Energy Commission (Eeely et al., 1981). In addition, there have been measurements made throughout the United States and the islands of the Pacific and Atlantic as parts of the SEAREX and... 

Earth s surface is through bucket collection of precipitation and subsequent analysis of the water for °Pb obtained over a specific period of time. This method has been used during the assay of precipitation for bomb-produced radionuclides such as Sr and Cs, notably by the Environmental Measurements Laboratory of the Department of Energy and its precursor, the Atomic Energy Commission. Detailed summaries, mainly along —80° W longitude in both hemispheres plus some other selected sites in the continental US, are available from the Department of Energy as unpublished reports.

One of the most impressive programmes of airborne radioactivity is the one implemented by the Environmental Measurement Laboratory (EML) in New York, USA. This started in January of 1963 as a continuation of a programme that was initiated by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in 1957, and was continued by them until the end of 1962.

Radionuclide analysis methods are published in analytical chemistry and radiochemistry journals, and in methods manuals issued by nuclear facilities such as government laboratories. For example, the Environmental Measurements Laboratory Procedures manual, HASL-300 (Chieco 1997), is an excellent source. Standard methods for radionuclide analysis (see Section 6.7) are available, and should be used whenever appropriate. If conditions differ from those to which published methods have been applied, radionuclide recovery and decontamination must be tested and additional process steps may have to be inserted.
