Environment packaging

Biocomposites usefulness is no longer in question and more and more reports are focused on applicative aspects in the environment, packaging, agriculture devices, biomedical fields, etc. Moreover, because industrials were concerned about sustainable developments and a controlled end of life, production cost of biopolymers goes on decreasing which will allow strong developments of biopolymer-based materials. Therefore, these materials will be technically and financially competitive towards synthetic polymer-based composites. Then, this class of material opens a new dimension for plastic industry for a better sustainable development. [Pg.474]

Some commercial thermoplastic starch polymer based products were highlighted in Table 6.1, and some of them can be examined in more detail in this section. Probably one of the first starch based products developed was the National Starch expanded starch foam packaging material ECO-FOAM . ECO-FOAM materials are derived from maize or tapioca starch and include modified starches. This relatively short-term, protected-environment packaging use is ideal for thermoplastic starch polymers. National starch now has additional thermoplastic starch materials, blends and speciality hydrophobic thermoplastic starches for a range of apphcations including injection moulded toys, extruded sheet and blown film apphcations. Weathering and transportation is followed by the sedimentation of material. The depositional environment can be defined as an area with a typical set of physical, chemical and biological processes which result in a specific type of rock. The characteristics of the resulting sediment package are dependent on the intensity and duration of these processes. The physical, chemical, biological and geomorphic variables... [Pg.78]

Toxicity. Antimony has been found not to be a carcinogen or to present any undue risk to the environment (9). However, because antimony compounds also contain minor amounts of arsenic which is a poison and a carcinogen, warning labels are placed on all packages of antimony trioxide. [Pg.455]

Electronic-Grade MMCs. Metal-matrix composites can be tailored to have optimal thermal and physical properties to meet requirements of electronic packaging systems, eg, cotes, substrates, carriers, and housings. A controUed thermal expansion space tmss, ie, one having a high precision dimensional tolerance in space environment, was developed from a carbon fiber (pitch-based)/Al composite. Continuous boron fiber-reinforced aluminum composites made by diffusion bonding have been used as heat sinks in chip carrier multilayer boards. [Pg.204]

The scalping of flavor and aroma by a package can be minimised by placing a barrier material as near as possible to the food. The ingress of undesirable permeants from the environment can be minimised by placing a barrier polymer between the food and the environment, not necessarily near the food. [Pg.493]
