English and metric

Production of carbon electrodes is a capital-intensive business. Two suppHers dominate the prebaked market. Carbon paste producers are more numerous and tend to serve local markets. There is no international standard for the threaded joints on carbon electrodes. Manufacturers of straight pin carbon electrodes have followed the physical specifications adopted for graphite electrodes (37). Unified standards do not exist for pinless joints resulting in limited interchangeability among brands. Electrode diameters are offered in both English and metric sizes with no restrictions on new or unique diameters. 

The eqnations given in snhseqnent chapters are presented as they appear in the original reference sonrce. Some may have mixed nnits (English and metric) and, therefore, the nnmerical constants are not dimensionless.

It is important to know that all the questions are based on real numbers. In terms of measurement, units of measure are used from both the English and metric systems. Although conversion will be given between English and metric systems when needed, simple conversions will not be given. Using the wrong units to solve a problem can be a costly error. In 1999, the Mars Climate Orbiter crashed into the atmosphere of Mars instead of flying closely by as planned. The probe was destroyed before it could collect any data. Two teams of engineers working on the probe had used different sets of units—English and metric—and no one had caught the error in time.

English units are still common in some countries, while people in other countries (and the scientific community everywhere), use metric units almost exclusively. Unit analysis provides a convenient method for converting between English and metric units. Several of the most commonly needed English-metric conversion factors are listed in Table 8.1 on the next page. Because the English inch is defined as 2.54 cm, the number 2.54 in this value is exact. The numbers in the other conversion factors in Table 8.1 are not exact.

It is often necessary to convert a given result from one system of units to another. The best way to do this is by a method called the unit factor method or, more commonly, dimensional analysis.
