English and metric systems

It is important to know that all the questions are based on real numbers. In terms of measurement, units of measure are used from both the English and metric systems. Although conversion will be given between English and metric systems when needed, simple conversions will not be given. (Examples of simple conversions are minutes to hours or centimeters to millimeters.)...

It is often necessary to convert a given result from one system of units to another. The best way to do this is by a method called the unit factor method or, more commonly, dimensional analysis. To illustrate the use of this method, we will consider several unit conversions. Some equivalents in the English and metric systems are listed in Table 1.4. The SI base unit of length is the meter (m), a distance only slightly longer than a yard. The relations between die English and metric system units that we will use most frequently in this text appear on the back inside cover. We will discuss how to convert English units into metric units, and vice versa, in Section 1.6. 

We are going to work this problem in lb s, ft- and lb-moles rather than g, mol, and m in order to give the reader more practice in working in both the English and metric systems. Many planes still use the English system of units.
