Chemical education researchers are often the only such specialist in a chemistry department. This situation often leads to possibilities of collaborating in the research projects of other faculty who need an expert in chemical or science education research as part of their team. Chapter 3 (7) describes how a chemical education researcher can build collaborations to support his or her own research. This chapter discusses the many ways in which being the chemical education expert in a department or on a campus can provide additional opportunities to work with colleagues in science and engineering who carry out traditional research, with school of education colleagues, with K-12 systems, or in community partnerships. Regardless of the size of the collegiate institution, its location, or its specialization, there are opportunities to participate in collaborative projects that can impact science and education research. 

In the past years, EER has been on the rise once more all aroimd the world (Borrego and Bernhard 2011). Engineers more and more often carry out their own educational research. There is a very strong movement within the engineering education commnnity to bridge theory, research, and practice. This is also the aim of the VCR in engineering educatioa Unfortnnately, many of the researches conducted were not translated into practice. On the other hand, many iimovations in engineering education are made without proper study of evidence, or even scholarly foundation. For this reason, the 2012 ASEE report by Jamieson and Lohmann, Iimovation with Impact, highlights the need for a culture of systematic iimovation with impact—systematically... 

Economic npheavals since 1989 undermined as well humanities and social science education and research. This negative impact was only intensified by the 2007 economic crisis thns further limiting collaborative pedagogical engagement and research on engineering education. 

The institutional frames and their impact become visible in the chapters by Akera and Tang, which point to the role of engineering education as a provider of formal skills in scales relevant to the eeonomy. But they go further to highlight how the governance of these institutions itself becomes a policy driver and a core part of the education and research institutions positioning.
