Each segment of the insulated wire and cable industry has its own set of standards, and cables are built to conform to specifications provided by a large variety of technical associations such as The Institute of Electrical Electronic Engineers (IEEE), The Insulated Cable Engineers Association, (ICEA), National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Rural Electrification Administration of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (REA), Association of Edison Illumination Companies (AEIC), MiUtary Specifications of the Department of Defense (MIL), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), National Electrical Code (NEC), etc. [Pg.322]

Pressure Vessels and Piping. Some of the most critical components of a chemical plant involve pressure vessels. A thorough knowledge of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Pressure Vessel Code (75) is essential for design and maintenance of chemical plants. Some states have their own codes, which usually conform closely to the ASME version (see High pressure technology Tanks and pressure vessels). [Pg.99]

Through combined effects of noncovalent forces, proteins fold into secondary stmctures, and hence a tertiary stmcture that defines the native state or conformation of a protein. The native state is then that three-dimensional arrangement of the polypeptide chain and amino acid side chains that best facihtates the biological activity of a protein, at the same time providing stmctural stabiUty. Through protein engineering subde adjustments in the stmcture of the protein can be made that can dramatically alter its function or stabiUty. [Pg.196]

Fluid Specifications. The performance characteristics of all antifreeze solutions are governed by fluid specifications, that have been developed over the years by industry standards committees, such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Additionally, most engine and/or cooling system manufacturers have thek own compositional specifications to which the fluids must conform. [Pg.190]

Pressure vessels carried aboard United States-registered ships must conform to rules of the U.S. Coast Guard. Subchapter F of Title 46, Code of Federal Regulat ions, covers marine engineering. Of this. Parts 50 through 61 and 98 include pressure vessels. Many of the rules are similar to those in the ASME Code, but there are differences. [Pg.1027]

From the above discussion, it follows that the quality and conformance to tolerance of the product characteristics should be designed in and not left to the process engineer and quality engineer to increase to the required level. In order to do this, designers need to be aware of potential problems and shortfalls in the capability of their designs. They therefore need a technique which estimates process capability and quantifies design risks. [Pg.35]

We will discuss three different approaches to engineer a more thermostable protein than wild-type T4 lysozyme, namely (1) reducing the difference in entropy between folded and unfolded protein, which in practice means reducing the number of conformations in the unfolded state, (2) stabilizing tbe a helices, and (3) increasing the number of bydropbobic interactions in tbe interior core. [Pg.354]

Protein engineering is now routinely used to modify protein molecules either via site-directed mutagenesis or by combinatorial methods. Factors that are Important for the stability of proteins have been studied, such as stabilization of a helices and reducing the number of conformations in the unfolded state. Combinatorial methods produce a large number of random mutants from which those with the desired properties are selected in vitro using phage display. Specific enzyme inhibitors, increased enzymatic activity and agonists of receptor molecules are examples of successful use of this method. [Pg.370]

The following sections include the relevant sections of the complete Act and indicate those parts of the legislation within the different plant categories to which the inspections provided by the independent engineering inspection companies will conform. It should, however, be appreciated that while the inspections provided will fulfill the statutory requirements for inspection, the actual responsibilities under the various Acts to conform remains the responsibility of the plant owner/user. It must be appreciated that the interpretation of any Act is a matter for the local Health and Safety Inspectorate, who should be consulted at all times if doubt exists as to whether any item of machinery and plant requires inspection to comply with a statutory provision. [Pg.140]

Most of the engineering plastics reproduce faithfully and easily conform to the mold configuration, and when processing parameters are appropriately controlled, they will repeat with excellent accuracy tolerance wise, etc. As an example for the past many decades, we see plastic gears and other precision products made of acetal, nylon, polycarbonate,... [Pg.164]

Another favorable aspect of these polymers is their conformity with the principles of green chemistry. The latter sets guidehnes for the chemical industry in order to secure sustainable development, while increasing process economy [3,4]. Briefly, green chemistry, and the related green engineering [5] call for an increase in, and/or upgrading of ... [Pg.105]
