Engineering characteristics

The concept of a ductile-to-brittle transition temperature in plastics is likewise well known in metals, notched metal products being more prone to brittle failure than unnotched specimens. Of course there are major differences, such as the short time moduli of many plastics compared with those in steel, that may be 30 x 106 psi (207 x 106 kPa). Although the ductile metals often undergo local necking during a tensile test, followed by failure in the neck, many ductile plastics exhibit the phenomenon called a propagating neck. Tliese different engineering characteristics also have important effects on certain aspects of impact resistance. [Pg.89]

The sources of contamination are usually those hazardous materials that are contained in drums, tanks, surface impoundments, waste piles, and landfills, as well as heavily contaminated media (such as soil) affected by the original leaking or spilling source. The purpose of defining sources of contamination is to help to identify the source location, potential releases, and engineering characteristics that are important in the evaluation of remedial actions, as well as waste characteristics, such as the type and quantity of contaminants that may be contained in or released to the environment, and the physical or chemical characteristics of the hazardous wastes present in the source. [Pg.601]

In recent years zeolites have been utilized in non-conventional forms which emphasize certain chemical or engineering characteristics of the materials. Novel forms include thin sheets made by coating processes and paper-making technology and zeoUte-contairiing fibers. [Pg.70]

Any study of the relation of physical constants or engine characteristics of a hydrocarbon to its molecular structure will, therefore, be made by observing the changes produced either by moving from point along the subseries curve, increasing or decreasing the... [Pg.358]

Aromatic hydrocarbons have exceptionally high engine characteristics. The Research octane numbers of all aromatic hydrocarbons thus far measured are above 100. Those measured by the Motor method are a little lower, but in all cases are above 95. The critical compression ratios at 600 revolutions per minute and 212° F., jacket temper-... [Pg.367]

The engine characteristics of aromatic hydrocarbons seem strongly dependent upon the nature of the side chain. The alignment of the knock resistance of the polymethyl-benzenes with structure corresponds quite closely with that found to be characteristic of the physical constants. The vicinal derivatives o-xylene, hemimellitine, and prehnitene... [Pg.368]

Much has been accomplished in the synthesis, separation, purification, and careful determination of both physical constants and engine characteristics. Much still remains to be done but the work is progressing. [Pg.373]

The principles to be followed in dynamic abrasion resistance measurement and the presentation of results as mean Mackensen-Mohs hardness (/fMM) or H0 hardness classes, on the basis of conversion formulae were discussed in detail in Chapter 4, along with analysis of the theoretical validity of the method and its comparison with other hardness measuring techniques. However, we do not have to convert to hardness units in every practical measurement. Often, determination of the susceptibility of a material to erosive destruction should prove an adequate engineering characteristic of a material. [Pg.291]

Adhesive Disadvantages. There are some limitations in using adhesives to form assemblies. The major limitation is that the adhesive joint is formed by means of surface attachment and is, therefore, sensitive to the substrate surface condition. Another limitation of adhesive bonding is the lack of a nondestructive quality control procedure. Finally, adhesive joining is still somewhat limited because most designers of assemblies are simply not familiar with the engineering characteristics of adhesives. [Pg.33]

The basic physical and engineering characteristics of ship NPU reactors, used as original data for building robust models, that is nominal and operation capacity (Nt, Nop), energy output s, fuel and coolant types etc., have been foimd on the basis of the analysis of the published data [10] (see Table 1). [Pg.275]

The initial phase of experiments will include a mapping of the engine characteristics using natural gas as a fuel. These data will be the basis for comparison and discussion of the results for different gas mixtures. The next step will be to use synthetic producer gas as a fuel as the most extreme low value gaseous fuel. Further experiments will include mixtures of synthetic producer gas and natural gas. [Pg.434]

Cohesive materials, particularly clays, are more effectively stabilized by the addition of hydrated lime. Best results are obtained with clays of medium to high plasticity. The lime supplies calcium cations, which replace the cations on the clay minerals, thus changing the mineralogy to a material with more desirable engineering characteristics. The chemical reaction continues for a long time, even years, as long as lime is present to keep the pH above 10. [Pg.109]
