Sometimes compendia do not contain a monograph for the specific item that we are interested in. We can use the compendia as guides, following the specifications established for similar items. Then we must use our judgment to establish parameters that the material should be tested for based on our knowledge of the chemistry of the material. The next step is methods development, to derive a test procedure that enables us to measure each parameter. The use of computers enables laboratories to greatly improve their production capabilities, but it also creates new tasks and responsibilities. For example, laboratories must verify computer programs used for data reduction in order to confirm the correctness of the calculations. To create an analytical method using commercially available or custom analytical software, laboratory chemists must exercise professional judgment in the selection of appropriate method parameters often accompanied by data entry by hand, which opens the door for errors to creep in. Today, electronic spreadsheets replaced manual calculations, and their correctness must be also verified. 

It is not easy to compute contraction coefficients in other cases, but they can be determined reasonably well by means of flow nets. However, without taking this much trouble, a little judgment will enable one to make a fair estimate of the contraction. 

As it appears preferable to clarify first the better defined systems before including more complicating factors, much work has been concentrated on the simple catalysts, and this review has been focused on that type of work, in an attempt to enable the reader to use his or her own judgment as to what extent the basic questions have been solved and focusing on additional variables is justified.
