Understanding the relationship between the composition of a mixture and its properties is fundamental to the development of formulated products. In the pesticide industry, formulation chemists seek to translate such an understanding into products that meet criteria established for properties such as suspensibility, emulsibility, storage stability, compatibility, and most importantly, biological activity. The preferable way to acquire the necessary knowledge is to deduce the properties of mixtures in terms of mechanisms that are operative at the microscopic level. However, mixtures are extremely complex systems and the available theory is usually insufficient for developing useful theoretical models. Because nitrile rubber is an unsaturated copolymer it is sensitive to oxidative attack and addition of an antioxidant is necessary. The most common practice is to add an emulsion or dispersion of antioxidant or stabilizer to the latex before coagulation. Bactericides are substances that destroy bacteria, and they can be used in various ways. They may be incorporated into the soluble-oil concentrate, either at concentrations suitable to protect the oil in storage, or at levels sufficient to provide a persistent bactericidal effect on the emulsion in service. The cost of providing sufficient bactericide to cover the use of the soluble oil at a high dilution might prove prohibitive.
