Lanolin alcohols are obtained by saponification of purified wool grease, a mixture of high molecular esters that is recovered in wool (qv) scouring. Ethoxylation of purified lanolin alcohols yields a full series of lipophilic and hydrophilic nonionic emulsifiers whose largest use is in cosmetic preparations. Manufacturers include Amerchol, Croda, ICI, Henkel Corporation, Westbrook Lanolin, Witco, and Pulcra, SA. 

Suspensions of oil in water (32), such as lanolin in wool (qv) scouring effluents, are stabilized with emulsifiers to prevent the oil phase from adsorbing onto the membrane. Polymer latices and electrophoretic paint dispersions are stabilized using surface-active agents to reduce particle agglomeration in the gel-polarization layer. 

Lipophilic ointment (oil ointment) consists of a lipophilic base (paraffin oil, petroleum jelly, wool fat [lanolin]) and may contain up to 10 % powder materials, such as zinc oxide, titanium oxide, starch, or a mixture of these. Emulsifying ointments are made of paraffins and an emulsifying wax, and are miscible with water. 

Examples of nonionic emulsifiers are polyoxyethylene, polyoxypropylene, fatty alcohol ether, polyethylene (or polypropylene), glycol fatty acid esters, lecithin, lanolin, cholesterol, etc... 

Lanolin and lanolin alcohols are excellent emulsifiers, giving oil-in-water emulsions, and can be combined with additional emulsifiers such as cetearyl alcohol to improve stability.8 The ability of anhydrous lanolin and especially lanolin alcohols to form stable emulsions with up to 300% (w/w) of water distinguishes lanolin from petrolatum in its physical properties.1 The chemical compositions of lanolin and petrolatum are also very different, as petrolatum is composed completely of hydrocarbons.16 Lanolin alcohols and petrolatum can be combined to form cholesterized petrolatum, which also has the capacity to form emulsions. For example, a mixture of 65% (w/w) lanolin, 20% (w/w) water, and 15% (w/w) petrolatum can incorporate an equivalent weight of water without changing its consistency.15,52... 

Although cholesterol is essentially insoluble in water, a soluble cholesterol derivative can be formed by reacting it with high levels of ethylene oxide.66,67 This ethoxylated product has balanced hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties. The increased hydrophilicity makes it useful as an oil-inwater emulsifier or as a stabilizer. Ethoxylated lanolin is used for viscosity regulation, pigment dispersion, and as a solubilizer. Less than 1% ethoxylated cholesterol is effective at reducing the viscosity of anionic lotions to make them easier to pour. Non-ionic systems require more ethoxylated cholesterol for this purpose 68... 

Lanolin has stood the test of time as an emulsifier and skin emollient. Its complex nature has been a rich resource of derivatives formed from fractionation and chemical reactions. Although the composition of lanolin is different from the lipids found on the surface of human skin, lanolin has been demonstrated to be equivalent in its ability to restore barrier function. In addition to the beneficial effects attributable to its physical properties, lanolin may also have a pharmacological effect on the epidermis.

Is a moderately hydrophilic emulsifier used in textile applications as an emulsifier for resin finishing and softener-lubricant systems. It is a good co-emulslfier in dye carrier solvent systems and for lanolin. 

Mineral oil and lanolin alcohols is an oily liquid used in topical pharmaceutical formulations and cosmetics as an emulsifying agent with emollient properties see Table I. It is used as a primary emulsifier in the preparation of water-in-oil creams and lotions and as an auxiliary emulsifier and stabilizing agent in oil-in-water creams and lotions.
