Empathy, expressing

Simple, straightforward explanations of a patient s condition and the rationale for a specific course of action are generally well received. For those unable to benefit because of cognitive disruption, reassurance and expressions of empathy and concern are often therapeutic. A thorough, brief review of what is known about the patient s disorder should be communicated while dispelling common myths about his or her condition (e.g., the problem is related to a lack of moral strength). A patient s prognosis should be realistically and, to the extent possible, optimistically explained. Various treatment options should also be discussed, as noted in the section Informed C of Chapter 2. [Pg.10]

A second requirement for the development of compassion is empathy. Empathy is a recognition of a feeling/thinking state in another,/>/mj an ability to at least partially experience that same state in yourself. Thus empathy ties in with self-knowledge. To recognize that someone is depressed, for example, could be done in a cold, intellectual way. You could learn that certain facial expressions, body postures, and styles of speaking usually mean that a person is depressed. To also emotionally know what it is like to feel depressed from your own experience leads to the experience of empathy. This does not necessarily mean that you must feel as depressed as the depressed person you are empathizing with. [Pg.266]

Modern psychology has thought of empathy as a late developmental function, but recent research suggests that it begins to develop within the first few years of life. We could say it is an innate part of our essential nature. It may be partly related to bodily/instinctive intelligence also, such that mimicking others postures and expressions helps us feel what they feel. [Pg.267]

Medicine is art and science. The art aspect consists of the way that the physician deals with the human aspect of the patient, expressing empathy, compassion, establishing a therapeutic relationship, and deahng with uncertainty the science is the attempts to understand disease processes, making rational treatment plans, and being objective in observations. The physician as scientist must be precise about how to elicit data and then carefully make sense of the information, using up-to-date evidence. Exercises to develop the skills of data analysis require interpretation of data in various representations, such as in tables or on graphs. [Pg.4]

Patients may include psychopaths who express habitual aggression and are responsible for much crime, some of which is violent. Impulsivity, aggression and lack of empathy are often observed in some patients following head trauma or encephalitis, which supports an organic cause. Drugs that block serotonin transporters and increase synaptic serotonin levels help these people. Hormonal effects also are involved, because of gender-related differences in the incidence of violence and aggressiveness. More than... [Pg.166]

A child with autism may seem to develop normally and then withdraw and become indifferent to interactions with other people, and focus intently on one thing to the exclusion of others for long periods. A child with autism may fail to respond to his name and avoid eye contact with other people. He or she does not respond normally to a person s tone of voice or facial expressions and seems to totally lack empathy. [Pg.200]

According to Parasuraman et al., customer satisfaction (i.e., gap 5) can be expressed in terms of five dimensions tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy (Parasuraman et al. 1988). These dimensions are the basis for the SERVQUAL method, which is an well-known method for measuring the quality of services through assessing customer satisfaction. The following section addresses different approaches for measuring service quality. [Pg.640]

A statement of personal concern. Express empathy and humanity. Let people know that your company knows how they re feeling. Let them know that you get it.
