With the ever increasing awareness of the need of environment protection, the emission of solvent vapors and organic fumes into the atmosphere should be prevented by treating the exhaust through a proper scmbber. Apart from good mechanical properties and chemical and corrosion resistance, another advantage of solventless epoxy coatings is that there is no emission of solvents and less of a possibility of contamination, making them more environmentally friendly than other options. To obtain solvent relevant emission profiles, measurements were performed around various solvent faetories and workshops in Wuppertal. Due to the fact that the emission of solvent plants is not restricted only to the point emitters and is more like a surface emission, direct measurements of the emissions were not possible. Because of this, to determine the emission profile of particular factories the measurements of down-wind sources and background NMVOCs concentrations were performed. The solvent use fingerprints thus obtained are presented in Figure 6. 

The analysis of coating materials is often employed in the investigation of complaints and substandard batches, or to evaluate competing products. Analysis also plays an important role in the assessment of raw materials, occupational safety and hygiene, and the emission of solvents and decomposition products during paint curing. 

Emissions of solvents from wood produets are deseribed under various eonditions, e.g. indoor air emissions from furniture or emissions in test ehambers. This information from open and patent literature clearly indicates that industry is actively working on the development of new technological processes to reduce emissions of solvents. 

The US pulp and paper industry operates over 550 facilities which employ over 200,000 people. Total shipments are 60 billion with an additional 80 billion in converted products. Several proeesses eontribute to the emission of solvents. These include chemical pulping kraft process (terpenes, alcohols, methanol, acetone, chloroform), bleaching (acetone, dichloromethane, chloroform, methyl ethyl ketone, carbon disulfide, chloromethane, and trichloroethane), wastewater treatment (terpenes, alcohols, methanol, acetone, chloroform and methyl ethyl ketone), and evaporators in chemical recovery systems (alcohols and terpenes). 

Solvents, either by design or default, are often emitted in to the air, and the total mass of emissions of solvents is not small. In a typical city in the United States, solvents can rival automobile exhaust as the largest source category of volatilized organic compound (VOC) emissions into the atmosphere. In the United Kingdom, solvent usage accounted for 36% of the estimated total VOC mass emissions in 1995. Such widespread emissions leads to increased concentrations of many different compounds in the ambient environment, and their release has diverse impacts on air quality. 

Emission of solvents depends on the evaporation rate of the solvent in the process. The evaporation rate from the surface depends on the concentration in the layer on the surface and the coefficient of mass transfer on the air-side. This relation is approximately true for degreasing operations using both liquid and vapors of organic solvents.
