The horse, like all animals, is powered by the molecular motor protein, myosin. A portion of myosin moves dramatically (as shown above) in response to ATP binding, hydrolysis, and release, propelling myosin along an actin filament. This molecular movement is translated into movement of the entire animal, excitingly depicted in da Vinci s rearing horse. [(Left) Leonardo da Vinci s "Study of a rearing horse" for the battle of Anghiari (c. 1504) from The Royal Collection Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.]... [Pg.1398]

Was the first to point out that the chemical reactivity of substituted cyclohexanes was controlled by their conformation. Barton was bom in Gravesend, Kent, England. He received a Ph.D. and a D.Sc. from Imperial College, London, in 1942 and became a faculty member there three years later. Subsequently, he was a professor at the University of London, the University of Glasgow, the Institut de Chimie des Substances Naturelles, and Texas A M University. He received the 1969 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work on the relationship of the three-dimensional structures of organic compounds to their chemical reactivity. Barton was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1972. [Pg.418]

There are other salient facts that do not appear in these lists. Thus, we have not included Hugh Taylor s knighthoods by Queen Elizabeth II and Pope Pius XII and his presidency of the Faraday Society. Nor have we mentioned his great contribution to the Manhattan Project. But it is not our intention within the scope of this paper to list every scientific accomplishment or even every facet of Hugh Taylor s complex personality. After a brief review of his early research, we will try to relay to the reader more personal reminiscences of Sir Hugh. [Pg.38]

Fig. 5). After her death, Antonio sets a gigantic spin machine in operation to take advantage of her death and engineer his own ruthless ascent to power. The political edge is sharpened by the casting Antonio is played by Anthony Booth, the father-in-law of Prime Minister Tony Blair. As Vindice and Ffippolyto are shot by Antonio s police force, the camera pans up the staircase on which they have been standing to reveal a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II hanging above Antonio s head and legitimising his regime.
