A versatile Laser-SNMS instrument consists of a versatile microfocus ion gun, a sputtering ion gun, a liquid metal ion gun, a pulsed flood electron gun, a resonant laser system consisting of a pulsed Nd YAG laser pumping two dye lasers, a non-resonant laser system consisting of a high-power excimer or Nd YAG laser, a computer-controlled high-resolution sample manipulator on which samples can be cooled or heated, a video and electron imaging system, a vacuum lock for sample introduction, and a TOF mass spectrometer.

Catalysts were characterized using SEM (Hitachi S-4800, operated at 15 keV for secondary electron imaging and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS)), XRD (Bruker D4 Endeavor with Cu K radiation operated at 40 kV and 40 mA), TEM (Tecnai S-20, operated at 200 keV) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). Table 1 lists BET surface area for the selected catalysts.

Figure 4 is a back-scattered electron image of the sintered platinum-doped tungsten oxide photocat yst (the bri t spheres are platinum). Analysis of the sintered platinum-doped tungsten oxide by ESCA reveal that the platinum the surface is Pt. ... 

Figure 5.15 More detail than seen in Fig. 5.14 is obtained in a scanning electron image. The reacted glass particles are covered by a distinct reaction layer of silica gel (Barry, Clinton Wilson, 1979).
