The likelihood that materials will produce local effects in the respiratory tract depends on their physical and chemical properties, solubiHty, reactivity with fluid-lining layers of the respiratory tract, reactivity with local tissue components, and (in the case of particulates) the site of deposition. Depending on the nature of the material, and the conditions of the exposure, the types of local response produced include acute inflammation and damage, chronic... 

Receptor Models. Receptor models, by their formulation, are effective in determining the contributions of various sources to particulate matter concentrations. In classic studies, sources contributing to airborne particle loadings have been identified in Washington, D.C. (78), St. Louis (9,24), Los Angeles (7,12), Portiand, Oregon (78), and Boston (79—81), as well as other areas including the desert (82). 

Using 2eohte catalysts, the NO reduction takes place inside a molecular sieve ceramic body rather than on the surface of a metallic catalyst (see Molecularsieves). This difference is reported to reduce the effect of particulates, soot, SO2/SO2 conversions, heavy metals, etc, which poison, plug, and mask metal catalysts. ZeoHtes have been in use in Europe since the mid-1980s and there are approximately 100 installations on stream. Process applications range from use of natural gas to coal as fuel. Typically, nitrogen oxide levels are reduced 80 to 90% (37). 

EPA will closely examine particulate size distribution in particulate emission trades because finer particulates disperse more widely, remain in the air longer, and frequently are associated with more adverse health effects. 

At Site I, personnel and equipment decontamination procedures were not monitored for their effectiveness in accordance with HAZ-WOPER requirements. The Site I subcontractor did not have provisions for particulate sampling, evaluating exposure to pesticides and herbicides, or evaluating the effectiveness of site zone boundaries and personnel decontamination procedures. Additionally, monitoring had not been conducted to verify that decontamination was not necessary for employees who leave the exclusion zone and enter a clean zone without undergoing decontamination. 

In April of 1998, the EPA published a final rule for emission of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), hydrocarbons (EIC), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM), and smoke opacity for newly manufactured and rcmanufacturcd locomotives. The rulemaking took effect in 2000 and is estimated by the EPA to cost the railroads 80 million per year—about 163 per ton of NOx reduced, according to EPA figures. The emissions standards for the several pollutants will be implemented in three tiers—for locomotives... 

The above model has been successfully used to describe the thermomechanical behaviour of iron-particle reinforced resins. More precisely, the importance of this model is that it provides a quantitative means for assessing the adhesion efficiency between the phases and its effect on the thermomechanical properties of the composite. Moreover, by using this model the thermomechanical behaviour, as well as the extent of the mesophase developed in particulates could be described. The... 

A derivatized hydroxyethylcellulose polymer gel exhibited excellent fluid-loss control over a wide range of conditions in most common completion fluids. This particular grated gel was compatible with the formation material and caused little or no damage to original permeability [1341]. Detailed measurements of fluid loss, injection, and regained permeability were taken to determine the polymer particulate s effectiveness in controlling fluid loss and to assess its ease of removal. Hydroxyethylcellulose can be etherified or esterified with long chain alcohols or esters. An ether bond is more stable in aqueous solution than is an ester bond [96]. 

The question of particulate matter is also of great importance. Although the total effect of particulate inclusion in the anterior chamber is not completely known, some possible results have been postulated [82].
