Effectiveness of Drug Treatment

In the clinical setting, zanamivir 12 and oseltamivir 19 are effective in both the prevention and treatment of influenza A and B infection. Benefit in treatment is restricted to patients treated within 48 h of symptom onset (Fleming 2003). Importantly, the effects of drug treatment are a rednction in the severity of illness, and in the incidence of secondary complications. The term of illness is generally rednced between 1 and 2.5 days. The evalnation of zanamivir (Calfee and Hayden 1998 Oxford 2000 Fleming 2003), oseltamivir (Doncette and Aoki 2001 Oxford 2005) and peramivir (Sidwell and Smee 2002) for the treatment, and prophylaxis, of inflnenza virus infection has been reviewed. The reader is directed to these reviews for further details of drug pharmacodynamics and clinical trial data. [Pg.138]

Abstract Proteomics, the comprehensive analysis of the protein complement of the genome of an organism, is becoming an increasingly important discipline for the identification of disease targets. In addition, the effects of drug treatment and metabolism can now be studied on the protein level in a comprehensive manner. [Pg.547]

Effects of drug treatment on bile composition could be beneficial or deleterious. For example, if biliary cholesterol secretion is increased in conjunction with a decrease or no change in cholesterol absorption, the overall effect may be positive. This result would suggest that reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) is increased by the treatment. This would be a very desirable effect as explained above. Increased bile salt secretion could also be beneficial for similar reasons. On the other hand, decreased biliary cholesterol or bile salt concentrations are cause for concern since either could be indicative of some degree of hepatotoxi-city and/or cholestasis. At the very least, they would indicate decreased RCT and increased CVD risk. As mentioned above, if drug treatment decreases cholesterol absorption independently of effects on biliary lipids, structural alterations of the compound may improve specificity and/or decrease its absorption so its effect is limited to the intestine. [Pg.172]

The history of researcli on the effectiveness of drug treatment is not nearly as long as that for alcohol, but in the last few decades a number of good studies have appeared. Our summary of what is known about drug treatment effectiveness, like that of alcohol treatment, excludes detoxification. [Pg.401]

Supernatant RT levels can be lowered owing to a cytostatic effect of drug treatment, giving the false impression of HIV-1 inhibition In these instances, CD4 downmodulation, which is independent of culture expansion, can still be used as a reliable indicator of HIV-1 inhibitory effects. [Pg.205]

Many recent publications have provided proof of the suitability of the ProteinChip System in the discovery and validation of new biomarkers for a wide range of diseases. This is true for ovarian [47], prostatic [48], pancreatic [49] and head and neck [50] cancer, as well as for a large number of other tumorous diseases [7]. Similarly, successful studies have been reported for Alzheimer s disease [51], viral [52], bacterial [53], and parasitic [54] infections. The same applies to investigations about possible new markers to monitor the effect of drug treatment [55-57], and also to predict transplant rejections [58, 59]. The ProteinChip System is currently used by more... [Pg.1334]

Effects of drug treatment on cytosolic levels of catecholamines and total oxidizable species were also investigated. Reserpine, an inhibitor of the vesicular monoamine transporter (this transporter loads vesicles with catecholamines), had no effect on the amount... [Pg.743]

As mention above, the measurement of blood cells can contribute to the diagnosis of many disorders. So, if someone has a blood cell disorder, it can be an important index of the response of the disease to treatment. It is also important to learn the effects of drug treatment or radiation therapy. The physician can determine the effectiveness of a drug that is been given to the paient from the blood cell count [1]. [Pg.597]

The difficulties of interpretation of urine findings do not apply to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and thus determination of HVA and 5HIAA in human lumbar CSF is becoming an important tool in the study of the metabolism in the brain of their respective precursors DA and 5HT and in the interpretation of the effects of drug treatment upon their metabolism. The assumption is made that the concentrations of... [Pg.160]
