The radioactive element is a silvery, shiny, soft metal that is chemically similar to calcium and barium. It is found in tiny amounts in uranium ores. Its radioactivity is a million times stronger that that of uranium. Famous history of discovery (in a shed). Initially used in cancer therapy. Fatal side effects. Small amounts are used in luminous dyes. Radium was of utmost importance for research into the atom. Today its reputation is rather shaky as its decay gives rise to the unpleasant radon (see earlier). In nuclear reactors, tiny amounts of actinium are formed from radium. 

The main drawback of RP is that cost containment is not always achieved, and when it is, it is fleeting. The reasons for the limited effect (small, shortterm savings) of RP on cost containment are (a) as we have seen, it is applied to a limited proportion of the market, which is generally not that which leads the growth in expenditure, (b) companies react by recovering the losses incurred on the products covered by the system through price increases in non-covered products, and (c) the system seeks to control prices yet does not influence either the increase in the number of drags prescribed or the structure of this consumption. 

Copper supplements can also have an anthelmintic effect. Small amounts of copper oxide wire particles (COWP) were effective against both incoming and established Haemonchus contortus worms (Bang et al., 1990) and a mineral supplement containing elemental copper reduced faecal egg counts in lambs (Lindqvist et al., 2001). Also, Burke et al. (2004) showed a great reduction of faecal egg counts and adult worm burden of H. contortus in COWP-treated lambs. However, Dimander et al. (2003) could not show an effect against GIN in grazing cattle. 

Alternative pharmacological approaches Clonidine, an o2 adrenergic agonist, has been employed as adjunctive therapy to assist in smoking cessation. However, results have been mixed or the effects small (Gourlay et al. 1994 Hilleman et al. 1993 Franks et al. 1989). Buspirone (BuSpar) is a 5-HTlA partial agonist with anxiolytic effects. It has been tested as a treatment for smoking cessation because anxiety is a prominent feature of nicotine withdrawal (Farid and Abate 1998). To date, results have been mixed and more controlled research is needed.

Well-documented human data can often provide very useful information on skin and/or respiratory tract irritation, sometimes for a range of exposure levels. Often, the only useful information on respiratory tract irritation, which can be a threshold effect in the workplace, is obtained from human experience. It may in some cases be possible to derive a reliable NOAEL and/or LOAEL from human studies however, usually there is only the information that a substance is irritating or, often by inference only, that it is not. The usefulness of human data on irritation will depend on the extent to which the effect, and its magnitude, can be reliably attributed to the substance under evaluation. Furthermore, there may be a significant level of uncertainty in human data on irritant effects because of poor reporting, lack of specific information on exposure, subjective or anecdotal reporting of effects, small numbers of subjects, etc. 

Hemodynamic effects - Small decreases in cardiac output and increases in systemic vascular resistance have occurred, with no significant negative inotropic effect. Blood pressure and pulse rate remain essentially unchanged. Mild depression of myocardial function has been observed following IV mexiletine (dosage form not available in the US) in patients with cardiac disease. 

The meaning of n can be inferred from Eq. (5.4) where a measures, in a way, the sensitivity of charge variations to substituent effects. Small n values indicate strong substituent effects. If inductive effects did no exist, the charges would be those corresponding to n = oo (i.e., a = 0), and all H atoms would carry the same charge. No theoretical method leads to this extreme result. 

From the above brief discussion it is difficult to imagine how NMR could have had the revolutionary impact on our understanding of the electronic and geometrical structures of molecules that it has had. However, in the period 1949-51, spectrometer systems (particularly magnets) were refined to the point where chemical shifts and nuclear spin-spin splittings became resolvable.
