Effect on critical

Physical Factors. Unsatuiated elastomers must be stretched for ozone cracking to occur. Elongations of 3—5% are generally sufficient. Crack growth studies (10—18) have shown that some minimum force, called the critical stress, rather than a minimum elongation is required for cracking to occur. Critical stress values are neady the same for most unsaturated mbbers. However, polychloroprene has a higher critical stress value than other diene mbbers, consistent with its better ozone resistance. It has been found that temperature, plasticization, and ozone concentration have httie effect on critical stress values. [Pg.236]

The influence of the substitution effect on critical conversion has been shown in Fig. 5 for the stoichiometric mixture of diepoxide and diamine. The critical conversion changes from 0.5 (q oo) to 0.618 (q 0), the ideal value being 0.577 for Q = 1/2. [Pg.38]

Subcritical neutron Interaction experiments were performed with bare and Lucite-reflected arrays of bottles of U solution. The effect on criticality of adding Lucfte moderator between the bottles was also studied. These experiments provide data for nuclear safety guidance in handling, storage, and shipment of this material, and for checking interaction calculations. [Pg.173]

Plutonium Isotopes other than Pu are invariably present in all plutonium. The presence of these isotopes can significantly affect the criticality control limits established for Pu. The effect on criticality of the even-neutron nuclides such as Pu and Pu is to cause the critical dimensions and masses for the isotopic mixture to be greater than that for Pu alone. The effects are strongly dependent on the neutron spectrum, however, and any moderating diluent that may be present, such as water. The highly fissile odd-neutron nuclide Pu will cause significant reductions in the critical dimensions and masses below that of °Pu. The minimum critical mass for Pu has been calculated to be only 260 g for a concentration of 32 g/liter in water, and the limiting critical concentration for this nuclide in water is only about 5 g/llter. [Pg.357]

Complete results of these initial experiments have been reported previously in the literature. Typical data collected from these experiments are shown in Table for both the 2 35 and 4.29 wt% U enriched rods. It is evident that of the neutron absorbers studied (for the plate thicknesses given), boral is the most effective neutron absorber. Future experiments with boral will explore the effect on criticality of using boral plates having different boron concentrations uid thicknesses. [Pg.586]
