The in vitro and in vivo effects of sulphated PS were also investigated against the pseudorabies virus (Suid HSV-1), the most notable of which is porcine HSV which has a well-documented history of epizootic infections, especially in Europe [105], In vitro experiments revealed that sulphated PS significantly reduced the number of lytic plaques, but in vivo only heparin protected mice against the pseudorabies virus.

The retarding effect of sulphates has been likewise found in tests with fibrin. 15 g. of moist fibrin, containing 5 g. of dry substance, are put in contact with pep dissolved in 60 c c. of 1.5 per cent HCl, to which has been added increasing quantities of sodium sulphate. After a digestion of two hours at 50 , it is diluted with water, the imdissolved fibrin is collected and weighed, after drying at 100°. 

According to Hanehara and Yamada [360] the adsorption of carboxylate admixtures is influenced by sulphate ions too and is diminishing with SO concentration increasing. Effect of Sulphates. Sulphur dioxide comes from combustion of fuels and is identified as one of the most important air pollutants which contribute to the corrosion of metals. In the presence of SO2, corrosion starts at 60 % relative humidity and the rates are considerably higher than in the absence of any contaminate. There is a close relation between the uptake of SO2 and the corrosion rate measured during field exposure over a period and it depends considerably on the acid hydrolysis of SO2 in water and the fast oxidation of SO2 on iron surfaces. The cycle consists of two reactions, the oxidative hydrolysis of iron sulphate and the subsequent acid corrosion of iron [67].
