Effect of medium

In the general context of the effect of medium upon rate, the data given in table 4.4 are of interest. 

A USDA report indicates that between 1967 and 1988, butter consumption remained stable at 2 kg per capita, margarine dropped from 5.1 to 4.7 kg, and measured total fat intake per day dropped from 84.6 to 73.3 g (14). This study also projects that the reduced consumption of tropical oils is only temporary and will return to former use levels, possibly even higher. One reason for this projected rise in tropical oil consumption is the knowledge of the beneficial effects of medium-chain length acids high in lauric oils. There is a keen interest in omega-3 fatty acids, as well as linoleic acid, contained in fish oils. 

One of the advantages of the fed-batch fermentation is the fact that the residual substrate concentration may be maintained at a very low level. This may result in a removal of catabolite repressive effects and avoidance of toxic effects of medium components. 

Bioassay on Solid Medium. A-9, a medium previously shown to be favorable for antibiotic production by actinomycetes in shake flasks (36), was modified for bioassays on solid medium. We halved the concentration of components in A-9 and adjusted the pH to 6.9-7.1 with KOH to reduce the possibility of osmotic or toxic effects of medium components themselves on seed germination and seedling growth. The medium was amended with 15 g agar per liter and poured into 10 x 10 x 1.5 cm square plastic petri dishes, about 60 ml per plate.

In Strickler and Berg theory, it is assiuned that fluorescence occurs from the original excited state without taking into account possible solvent reorientation and subsequent formation of a new lower energy excited state. Hence, the relationships between absorption and emission spectra may be more complicated than simply following Strickler and Berg theory, and ti may differ from These results indicate the importance of considering the effect of medium on fluorescence properties for these compounds. 

DNA mediated photoelectron transfer reactions have been demonstrated60 . Binding to DNA assists the electron transfer between the metal-centered donor-acceptor pairs. The increase in rate in the presence of DNA illustrates that reactions at a macromolecular surface may be faster than those in bulk homogeneous phase. These systems can provide models for the diffusion of molecules bound on biological macromolecular surfaces, for protein diffusion along DNA helices, and in considering the effect of medium, orientation and diffusion on electron transfer on macromolecular surfaces.
