In the USA producers included Eastman Kodak (Tenite PTMT), General Electric Corporation of America (Valox), and American Celanese (Celanex). In Europe major producers by the end of the decade were AKZO (Amite PBTP), BASF (Ultradur), Bayer (Pocan) and Ciba-Geigy (Crastin). Other producers included ATO, Hills, Montedison and Dynamit Nobel. With the total Western European market at the end of the decade only about 7000 tonnes other companies at one time involved in the market such as ICI (Deroton) withdrew. 

The Eastman Chemical Company is the sole producer of CHDM in the USA. CHDM is typically produced as a mixture of cis- and trans-isomers, with an equilibrium ratio of approximately 30/70 cis/trans. Additional patents disclose technology for affecting the CHDM isomer ratio [19] and for isomerization of d.v-CHDM to tran.v-CHDM [14], Most commercial CHDM polyesters are prepared from the approximately 30/70 cis/trans ratio, with this isomer ratio being maintained throughout the polymerization process. The effect of the cis- and trans-CHDM isomer ratio on the melting point of terephthalate-based polyester has been previously studied and reported [9, 20], This relationship is shown in Figure 7.1.

Bachmann s products were known as Type B RDX and contained a constant impurity level of 8-12%. The explosive properties of this impurity were later utilized and the explosive HMX, also known as Octogen, was developed. The Bachmann process was adopted in Canada during World War II, and later in the USA by the Tennes-see-Eastman Company. This manufacturing process was more economical and also led to the discovery of several new explosives. A manufacturing route for the synthesis of pure RDX (no impurities) was developed by Brockman, and this became known as Type A RDX.

As a group, many other researchers were working on new processes for prepg RDX both in the USA (Refs 24, 27,28,30,32,34,36,37, 38, 42 60i and in Canada (Refs 78,86,87,88,89,90,92 and others). The Bachmann process was applied industrially during WWII at one plant in Canada and later in the US by the Torinessee-Eastman Co (Holston Ordnance Works, Kingsport, Tenn).
