Materials. VEC was prepared by the catalyzed addition of CO2 to 3,4-epoxy-l-butene using conditions typical of that used industrially [77], then purified by vacuum distillation. Other raw materials were used as received without any additional purification. Mixed xylenes, vinyl acetate (VA), butyl acrylate (BA), butyl methacrylate (BMA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), styrene (St), and t-butyl hydroperoxide were obtained from Aldrich Chemical Company. Lupersol 575 (t-amyl peroxy (2-ethylhexanoate)) was supplied by Elf Atochem. Vazo 67 (2,2 -azobis(2-methylbutyronitrile)) was obtained from DuPont Chemical Company. Vinyl pivalate (NE05), vinyl 2-ethylhexanoate (V2EH), Tergitol NP-40 (non-ionic surfactant) and QP-300 (hydroxy ethyl cellulose) were obtained from Union Carbide Coq)oration. Aerosol OT-75 (surfactant) was obtained from Cytec. Sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate was obtained from Henkel Corporation. Ethyl 3-ethoxy propionate (EEP), propylene glycol monomethyl ether (PM) and PM acetate (PM Ac) are Eastman Chemical Company products. 

Materials. Terephthaldicarboxaldehyde (Aldrich), diethyl bis(hydroxymethyl) malonate (Aldrich), p-toluenesulfonic acid (Aldrich), potassium hydroxide (85 wt%, Fisher), pyridine (Fisher), glutaric dialdehyde (50wt% aqueous solution, Aldrich), ethylene glycol divinyl ether (Aldrich), ethyl glycolate (Aldrich), isophthalic dicarboxaldehyde (Lancaster), propionaldehyde (Eastman Chemical), isovaleraldehyde (Aldrich), 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline (Acros), ammonia (7M in methanol, Acros), l-methoxy-4-(methylthio)benzene (Aldrich), silver... 

Ektasolve is a solvent series of glycol ethers and glycol-ether esters available from Eastman Chemical Products, Inc., Kingsport, TN. 

The glycol ethers formed by reaction of an alcohol or phenol with ethylene or propylene oxide to yield a solvent with both an alcoholic and ether functional groups are discussed in Chapter 13. Major producers of the alcoholic solvents include BASF Corporation, Eastman Chemical Company, Exxon Chemical Company, Hoechst Celanese Company, Shell Chemical Company, and Union Carbide Corporation. This chapter will discuss the naming nomenclature for the alcohols, their physical properties, the various industrial uses, possible environmental concerns, and the safe handling of the alcohols. 

Major producers for the acetate solvents include E.I. DuPont de Nemours Company, Eastman Chemical Company, Exxon Chemical Company, Hoechst Celanese Chemical Company, Shell Chemical Company, and Union Carbide Corporation. In addition, Arco Chemical Company and The Dow Chemical Company produce some of the glycol ether acetates discussed in this chapter. The high boiling-point acetates produced by Exxon are sold under the trade-name of Exxate, while the alkyl propionates are sold under the tradename of Ucar by Union Carbide. The dibasic esters sold by DuPont carry the common designation DBE (dibasic ester) solvent. The glycol ether acetates are products of the Arco Chemical, The Dow Chemical Company, Eastman Chemical Company and Union Carbide Corporation. The trademarks for these glycol ether acetates are shown in Table 13.1. 

Obtained from Eastman Organic Chemicals, b.p. 175-181°. This solvent, in which the benzyne precursor is very sparingly soluble, seemed slightly superior to trimethylene glycol dimethyl ether (b.p. 222°) in which the solubility is considerably higher. o-Dichlorobenzene (b.p. 179°), a still better solvent for the dipolar salt, is less satisfactory than the ether. Diethyl oxalate (b.p. 184°) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (b.p. 195°) are unsatisfactory.
