Early examples

With the probable exception of Wohler s isomerization of ammonium isocyanate to urea, most of the major advances in organic chemistry have been preceded and presaged by a number of diverse and perhaps minor advances. In some cases the early work was recognized, extended and built upon. In other cases, early examples of particular phenomena were recognized only after a general statement of principles had been offered. Phase transfer catalysis (ptc) is a major advance which is preceded by earlier examples of related phenomena but most if not all of these examples were recognized as examples of phase transfer catalysis only after the principles had coalesced in several minds across the world. [Pg.1]

There are undoubtedly many early examples of the phenomenon now known as phase transfer catalysis and a presentation of all of them is neither valuable nor feasible. Some of the early work does merit presentation, however, if only to provide a sense of perspective on the field. Wittig and coworkers demonstrated in 1947 the value of utilizing tetramethylammonium cations paired with trityl and fluorenide ions for alkylation in dry alcohol solution [1 ]. Jarrousse found that cyclohexanol and phenyl-acetonitrile could both be alkylated in a two phase system and the catalytic effect of quaternary ammonium salts was clearly recognized (see Eqs. 1.1 and 1.2) [2] Sarrett, in his classic cortisone synthesis, found that either Triton B or the Mannich base [Pg.1]

Resin bound quaternary ammonium hydroxide groups (on anion exchange resins) were reported as catalysts as early as 1952 to effect cyanohydrin formation, the benzoin condensation, and cyanoethylation [5]. [Pg.2]


However, with the advent of lasers, the teclmique of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) has probably become the single most popular means of detennining product-state distributions an early example is the work by Zare and co-workers on Ba + FLT (X= F, Cl, Br, I) reactions [25]. In the industrial arena, the term power generation most typically refers to the production of electrical or mechanical power via any of several energy conversion processes. The discovery of ionones and methyhonones was an early example of the need to develop synthetic fragrance materials because of the high cost of natural materials. SNR s fluidized-bed cogeneiation system is an early example of the commercial development of AFBC technology. Foster Wheeler designed, fabricated, and erected the coal-fired AFBC/boHer, which generates 6.6 MWe and 37 MW thermal (also denoted as MWt) of heat energy. The thermal energy is transferred via medium-pressure hot water to satisfy the heat demand of the tank farm. The unit bums 6.4 t/h of coal and uses a calcium to sulfur mole ratio of 3 to set the limestone feed rate. Indeed, great emphasis was placed on the presentation of compounds in crystalline form for many years, early chromatographic procedures for the separation of natural substances were criticized because the products were not crystalline.
