Ear lobe

Nickel contact dermatitis can occur among wearers of nickel-containing jewelry, more common among females than males. This is particularly true of nickel sulfate, presen t in some jewelry, Localization of sites unexpectedly involves the ear lobes, neck, fingers, and wrists. Nickel is a major offender in connection with AECD (allergic eczematous contact dermatitis). [Pg.1074]

Data compiled by Sidell (1992) revealed that for individuals exposed to VX dermally, gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting) occurred in 0.6% (1/166) when RBC-ChE activity was 50% of control valnes, and in 8% (2/24), 33% (9/27), 45% (19/42) and 67% (16/24) when RBC-ChE levels were 40 9%, 30-39%, 20-29%, and less than 20% of control valnes, respectively. Sim (1962) reported that a dose of 5 g VX/kg applied to the cheeks or ear lobes resnlted in symptoms of systemic toxicity in abont half of the test subjects. [Pg.228]

A 45-year-old woman received topotecan and colony-stimulating factor for ovarian cancer and developed erythematous and slightly pruritic plaques on the upper and lower limbs and ear lobes about one week later (117). The lesions subsided spontaneously in about 10 days and recurred after the next dose. A skin biopsy showed neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis all skin cultures were negative. [Pg.3460]

The Reflotron system consists of the reagent carrier, reflection photometer and an air displacement pipette or applicator. It is easy to operate. The required blood sample is obtained by puncturing the finger pad or ear lobe with... [Pg.331]

An air displacement pipette (Fig. 33) and an applicator (Fig. 34) are used with a nominal volume of 32 pi. It is not necessary to rinse the tip of the pipette, since it is entirely impractical (and in fact impossible) to rinse the tip when drawing blood from the finger pad or ear lobe. However, the test strip must... [Pg.333]

Gently pull the ear lobe upwards and backwards, to straighten the ear canal. [Pg.228]

Older children will not find the process too distressing and generally will cooperate. The main difference when administering ear drops or spray to a child is that the ear lobe needs only to be pulled backwards to open the ear canal. [Pg.228]

Normally, sensors of pulse oximeters are applied at peripheral vessels in the finger, toe, or ear lobe. Their signal depends also but to a minor extent on the circulation situation. In the... [Pg.357]

Pulse oximeter sensors consist of a pair of small and inexpensive red and infrared LEDs and a single, highly sensitive, silicon photodetector. These components are mounted inside a reusable rigid spring-loaded clip, a flexible probe, or a disposable adhesive wrap (Figure 6.6). The majority of the commercially available sensors are of the transmittance type in which the pulsatile arterial bed, for example, ear lobe, fingertip, or toe, is positioned between the LEDs and the photodetector. Other probes are available for reflectance (backscatter) measurement where both the LEDs and photodetectors are mounted side-by-side facing the skin [7,8]. [Pg.98]

Suunto and Garmin types), and pulse metres, which measure the mechanical pulsation of blood flow in capillaries using photo-reflectance, microphone or pressure bulb. The latter techniques require the sensor to be placed near an artery or on an extremity such as an ear lobe or a finger. As such, it has been said that they may not be reliable under active conditions where the sensor can easily fall off or miss a pulse due to movement (Knight et ah, 2005). However, more recent commercial successes in this area, for example, the Mio strapless heart rate monitor wristband (Mio Global, 2014), seem to indicate that the concerns have been addressed. [Pg.177]

Gout is commonly associated with rich food and alcohol consumption. Rich food is a source of dietary DNA and RNA, which is broken down to urate. Alcohol causes the accumulation of lactate, which competes with urate for excretion by the kidney. Gout results when the concentration of urate (which is sparingly soluble) in the blood increases to a concentration when it is precipitated as crystals of uric acid. This causes considerable pain, as illustrated in the picture The Gout by James Gitray in 1799. The needle-shaped crystals of uric acid can be deposited around joints, especially in the big toe. Crystals can also be deposited in the urinary tract as renal stones or in the skin as tophi, e.g. in the ear lobe. Gout is treated with the xanthine oxidase inhibitor, allopurinol, which restricts the production of uric acid. [Pg.127]

The guinea-pig ear lobe resembles human skin in many respects, including the morphology of the reaction, the timing of the maximal response, the concentrations of the eliciting substances needed to produce the reaction, the tachyphylaxis phenomenon, and the lack of an inhibitory effect of antihistamines on the NIICRs. [Pg.223]

The main cold injuries are frostnip, frostbite, immersion foot, and trenchfoot, which occur in localized areas of the body. Frostnip is the mildest form of cold injury. It occurs when ear lobes, noses, cheeks, hngers, or toes are exposed to cold. The skin of the affected area turns white. Frostnip can be prevented by warm clothing and is treated by simple rewarming. [Pg.332]

New Test Methods - A procedure has been established for treat-ing cutaneous Candida albicans infections of the rabbit triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog Parenteral ) was used to depress host responses before and after localized infection of the ear lobe.15 Therapeutic efficacy of topically applied agents was based on a subjective evaluation of the lesions and culture scores. [Pg.147]

A 56-year-old man with chronic renal insufficiency developed irregular atrophic erythematous plaques on his forehead, cheeks, and ear lobes after taking furosemide for 4 years. Histology showed localized bullous pemphigoid with IgG class autoantibodies to the... [Pg.440]

Another distinctive specific sarcoidosis skin lesion is lupus pernio, relatively symmetric, violaceous, indurated plaque-like and nodular sarcoidal lesions occurring on the nose, ear lobes, cheeks, and digits (Figs. 6 and 7). Lupus pernio... [Pg.229]

Collection of Material.—Capillary blood may be drawn from the ear lobe or the finger, usually the thumb above the bed of the nail. The region is cleaned with ether or alcohol, and a stab, 1-2 mm. deep, is made with a sterile puncture-apparatus or Hagedom needle. [Pg.452]
