The synthetic fiber industry as we know it began m 1928 when E I Du Pont de Nemours Company lured Professor Wallace H Carothers from Harvard University to direct their research department In a few years Carothers and his associates had pro duced nylon the first synthetic fiber and neoprene a rubber substitute Synthetic fibers and elastomers are both products of important contemporary industries with an economic influence far beyond anything imaginable m the middle 1920s... [Pg.4]

The effect of °Co y-ray irradiation on the mechanical properties, surface morphology, and fractography of blends of plasticized PVC and thermoplastic copolyester elastomer, Hytrel (E.I. Du Pont de Nemours Company, Inc., Wilmington, Delaware), have been studied by Thomas et al. [445]. Radiation has two major effects on the blend cross-linking of the Hytrel phase and degradation of PVC phase. Both effects are found more prominent at higher radiation dose. [Pg.904]

Personal protective equipment is clothing and/or respiratory equipment worn to protect the body against various forms of contamination. Some of the most common forms of personal protective equipment include dust masks, air purifying respirators, protective suits made from particulates or chemically resistant materials such as Tyvek (E.I. Du Pont de Nemours Company, Inc., Wilmington, DE) and/or other fabrics, and lightweight protective rubber gloves or chemical-resistant gloves. [Pg.156]

Interest in the uses of HMPT has also been maintained, but a warning has been issued (by the E. I. du Pont de Nemours Company and the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) about its potential acute toxicity. HMPT has been used in the synthesis of 2,4-bis(dimethylamino)qui nolines,9 8 as a solvent for reactions between carbonyl compounds and sulphur," for the conversion of iV-benzylcarbox-amides into 3-phenylpropionitriles,100 in reactions between metals or organometallic compounds with a variety of organic substrates,101 and as a solvent for alkylation reactions of /J-keto-esters and related compounds in which the alkylation reaction is accompanied by de(alkoxycarbonylation) (Scheme 7).102... [Pg.124]
