Duodenitis

Prior to this work, dietary fiber, of which ceUulose is oae of the more important constituents, was considered important primarily as a means of preventing or overcoming constipation. Otherwise, dietary fiber was considered to be a metaboHcally iaert substance. A large variety of diseases such as appendicitis, hiatus hernia, gallstones, ischemic heart disease, diabetes, obesity, dental caries, and duodenal ulcers are now suspected to be associated with the consumption of a highly refined diet (42). 

The mechanism by which sucralfate accelerates healing of duodenal ulcers has not been determined. It does not have significant antisecretory, acid neutralizing activity or direct stimulation of ulcer healing. It is known that the mechanism is local rather than systemic. Binding of pepsin or bile salts may contribute to its effect. It is indicated for the short-term therapy of active duodenal ulcers and for maintenance at reduced dosage. 

Magnesia and aluminum suspension is useflil for the therapy of duodenal ulcers when given at high doses at frequent intervals. It is available in both hquid and tablet formulations. 

The word hormone is derived from the Greek hormaein, meaning to set in motion or to excite. It was used initially to define the activity of secretin [1393-25-5] (1), a gastrointestinal polypeptide released into the blood by the duodenal mucosa to stimulate pancreatic acinar cells to release bicarbonate and water. 

Tripotassium dicitratobismuthate [57644-54-9] (bismuth subcitrate), De-Nol is a buffered aqueous suspension of a poorly defined, water-insoluble bismuth compound. It is said to very effective for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers (180,184). There have not yet been any reports of bismuth encephalopathy following the use of this dmg. 

Picrasma crenata. Stated to contain an uncharacterised alkaloid sigmine, which lowers the contractility and tonicity of the isolated duodenal preparation of the rabbit. In dogs it is hypotensive and lowers concentration of blood sugar, 3 to 4 hours after injection. (Pereira, Ann. foe. med. Univ. S. Paulo, 1938, 14, 269 Chem. Abstr., 1939, 33, 3877).)... 

Antacids are neutralizing agents. Examples are magnesium hydroxide, magnesium trisylicate and aluminium hydroxide. Prior to the introduction of histamine-H2 receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors, they were the standard drugs for the treatment of duodenal/ peptic ulcers. Today their clinical use is limited to the treatment of dyspepsia and the symptomatic relieve for patients with peptic ulcers.

These drug are used for the medical treatment of agastric or duodenal ulcer, gastric hypersecretory (excessive gastric secretion of hydrochloric acid) conditions, and GERD. These drug may also be used as prophylaxis of stress-related ulcers and acute upper GI bleeding in critically ill patients. 

The proton pump inhibitors are particularly important in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori in patients with active duodenal ulcers. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been implicated as a causative organism in a type of chronic gastritis and in a large number of cases of peptic and duodenal ulcers. 

The proton pump inhibitors are used for treatment or symptomatic relief of various gastric disorders, including gastric and duodenal ulcers, GERD, or pathological hypersecretory conditions.
