Carefully identify at least 10 sampling locations in the blender to represent potential areas of poor blending. A general recommendation with vertical mixers is that about 15 min mixing time is adequate after the last ingredient has been added to the mixer. With horizontal and drum mixers the mixing time is shorter, about 5-10 min after addition of the last ingredient.

As indicated in the introduction (Section 4.2.3.1) of this section, many different techniques may be applied to induce irregular movement which will cause collisions and, if sufficiently high adhesion forces are present, bonding (agglomeration). One of the earliest drum mixers that was applied in the fertilizer industry for agglomeration (granulation) produced a curtain of solid materials as sketched in Fig. 7.24. If acid and ammonia are sprayed onto the curtain and/or added by sparger tubes granulation occurs during ammoniation. The co-processing (ammoniation and granulation) makes this technique a most beneficial one.

After having determined all or at least the most important characteristics of the feed material, the preselected agglomeration method must be used to produce agglomerated products. In the laboratory, such experimental work is relatively easy and meaningful for all tumble/growth agglomeration methods. Small discs, drums, mixers, and fluidized bed processors are available that can simulate the growth process satisfactorily.
