Numerous equipment types can be used for agglomeration, including horizontal ribbon and vertical mixers, rotary drums, zig-zag mixers, and pan agglomerators. Horizontal ribbon mixers as shown in Fig. 36.41 are used primarily for dry mix formulating, where only limited agglomeration occurs. They are comprised of a U-shaped trough and a ribbon or paddle-type agitator. Liquids are sprayed onto the surface of the dry material and slowly dispersed into the mix. Mixer operations can be either batch or continuous. [Pg.1738]

A general recommendation with vertical mixers is that about 15 min mixing time is adequate after the last ingredient has been added to the mixer. With horizontal and drum mixers the mixing time is shorter, about 5-10 min after addition of the last ingredient. [Pg.238]

Industrial equipment. Rotating-shell mixers or tumbling mixers are shown in Fig. 3. Drum-type, cubical-shaped, double-cone, and twin-shell blenders with their axis of rotation horizontal to the center of the drum on its axis increase crossflow and improve the mixing action. Low Shear Mixers The most simple low shear mixers use horizontally oriented cylindrical drums that rotate about their axis. Many of these mixers are operating in a batch mode and feature differently shaped lifters or internal baffles or the vessels are shaped such that the otherwise regular flow of material is modified to a stochastic movement. Continuously operating cylindrical drum blenders resemble the previously described drum agglomerators (see Section 7.4.1). [Pg.166]

A variation of the stirred bed design involves a horizontal stirred drum, filled to two-thirds depth with substrate, with introduction of air through a perforated central shaft embedded in the substrate bed and upon which mixer blades are mounted (Fig. 10). This bioreactor has been successfully used for... [Pg.114]
