Drugs lysergic acid diethylamide

Some neuroleptics, including clozapine, are potent 5-HT-receptor antagonists and the possible role of 5-HT in the action of neuroleptics and the development of schizophrenia has recently generated much interest (Busatto and Kerwin 1997). This has centred primarily on 5-HT2A receptors found in the limbic cortex, which are linked to neuronal excitation and believed to mediate the hallucinogenic effects of drugs such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). [Pg.365]

Indeed, most of the "progress in the development of recreational drugs has been in the search for compounds that are only modest chemical variations of centuries-old drugs. The invention of entirely new mind-altering drugs (such as lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD) has been relatively uncommon. [Pg.3]

Hallucinogen-like activity of these compounds as potential bioisosteres of T,T-dimethyltryptamine was evaluated in the two-lever drug discrimination paradigm using LSD- and DOI-trained rats (LSD = lysergic acid diethylamide DOI = 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine). [Pg.59]

LSD is colorless and odorless, and its effects are unpredictable. Finally, some patients may die before hospitalization because the behavioral effects of the ingested drug may result in traumatic injury. Intoxication with alcohol and other sedative-hypnotic drugs is a common contributing factor to motor vehicle accidents. Patients under the influence of hallucinogens such as phencyclidine (PCP) or lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) may suffer trauma when they become combative or fall from a height. [Pg.1249]

Both indoleamine (e.g., lysergic acid diethylamide, LSD psilocybin) and phenethylamine hallucinogens (e.g., mescaline) increased pupil diameter.26 There have been no systematic studies of the effects of these drugs on dynamic measures of the light reflex. Phencyclidine (PCP) does not cause marked changes in pupil size or light reflex. However, subjects intoxicated with PCP often show horizontal and vertical nystagmus.26... [Pg.136]
