Drug Intervention Program

Treatment of drug addicts can be sqDarated into two phases detoxification and relapse prevention. Detoxification programs and treatment of physical withdrawal symptoms, respectively, is clinically routine for most drugs of abuse. However, pharmacological intervention programs for relapse prevention are still not veiy efficient. 

In conclusion, structured programs that are based in social learning theory, as well as conjoint treatment, are nonmedical interventions that seem to enhance outcomes in the treatment of drug-use disorders. Our earlier discussion showed that treatment of alcohol-use disorders also is improved with these interventions. This seems to warrant their continued application and study in alcohol and drug treatment programs.

The assessment and treatment of autistic disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) requires a multidisciplinary team approach. Initial interventions are largely based on educational programming and behavior management principles, particularly for preschool- and school-aged children and adolescents. Speech therapy is usually essential and physical and occupational therapy are often needed as well. Despite these extensive therapeutic efforts, many children, adolescents, and adults with PDDs remain significantly impaired. Under these conditions, drug treatment is often necessary and appropriate.
