This work was supported by Grant GM 27256 from the National Institutes of Health and Grant DA 02507 from the National Institute of Drug Abuse. LL. is an American Cancer Society Research Professor of Biochemistry (Award PRP-21). H.V.V. is the recipient of a Research Career Award (5K6-AI-2372) from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. We thank Dr. Y. Hirata of Meijo University for generous gifts of palytoxin isolated from Palythoa tuberculosa. We thank Dr. T. Yasumoto, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, for the maitotoxin preparation. We thank also Jeffrey A. Bessette and Nancy Worth for their technical assistance and Inez Zimmerman for preparation of the manuscript. [Pg.231]

Nitrites were highly popular in the United States in 1970s, particularly in the gay community. One study, published in 1988 in the National Institute of Drug Abuse Research Monograph Series, reported that by 1979 up to five million people used nitrites weekly. By the early 1980s, however, nitrite use dropped dramatically. In the United States, amyl nitrite became available solely by prescription in 1979. Also, nitrite use was associated with Kaposi s sarcoma, the most common cancer affecting people with AIDS. [Pg.256]

We wish to thank ShiYi Yue and Philippe Walker for fruitful collaboration. Trauma also appears to be a risk factor in facilitating microorganism entry into the synovial space. One study found that 35% of patients with infectious arthritis had preexisting joint disease. Unlike children, adults often have significant systemic diseases that predispose them to infectious arthritis, such as diabetes meUims, immunosuppressive states (cancer, fiver disease), or preexisting arthritis. Intravenous drug abusers also are prone to develop septic arthritis. Arthritis, joint trauma, and surgery are other important risk factors because chronic inflammation or trauma makes the joint more susceptible to infection. In addition, rheumatoid arthritis patients may be prone to... [Pg.2122]

Nazi pharmacracy was based on the premise that the Jew was a cancer on the body politic of the Reich it had to be removed at any cost. American pharmacracy is based on the premise that the individual with a dangerous disease, epitomized by the drug abuser, is a threat to the well-being of the nation he has to be cured at any cost. In a brief article in JAMA, Leshner repeats this... [Pg.141]

Absolute contraindications for using a potential donor include previous myocardial infarction, severe echocardiographic ventricular dysfunction, severe coronary artery disease (detected by coronary angiogram), intractable ventricular arrhythmia and positive HIV status. Relative contraindications include, among others, positive hepatitis B or C serology, sepsis, history of metastatic cancer, evidence of cardiac contusion, prolonged hypotension, non-critical coronary artery disease, and a history of intravenous drug abuse (Miniati and Robbin 2002). [Pg.15]

As discussed earlier, forensic pharmacology and toxicology are not limited to the study of drugs of abuse or poisons. These fields of science also have a growing role in the legal system to help resolve civil issues related to chemical exposure and cancer causation, medical malpractice as a result of drug interactions, and product liability issues. [Pg.122]

After heart disease and cancer, alcohol-related disorders are considered the third most important health problem in the United States, estimated to account for at least one fourth of all hospitalizations in this country. Almost 50% of those who suffer from alcohol dependence also abuse other legal and illicit drugs (see Appendix D). Alcohol is involved in 25% to 35% of all suicides and 50% to 70% of all homicides it also figures prominently in accidental deaths and domestic violence (388, 389). Furthermore, causes of death resulting from excessive alcohol use include the following ... [Pg.295]

Local legislation limits the availability and choice of opioids in many countries, but there can also be a reluctance to prescribe opioids for non-cancer pain due to the assumption that susceptible individuals may become addicted to these potent drugs through abuse. However, if opioids are prescribed on an individual basis with adequate support and education for the patients as well as their familes or carers, a great deal of unnecessary chronic pain and suffering can be prevented. But today there are still several unresolved clinical issues surrounding opioid use for which there is no data to construct a suitable policy. [Pg.9]
