Droplet nuclei

Specific ventilation recommendations were included in the CDC guidelines. The recommendations for isolation rooms serve two purposes. The first is dilution of contaminant, in this case droplet nuclei in the isolation room, The second is isolation of the space occupied by known or suspected TB patients from adjacent areas. The CDC and Conroy, et al. present recommended operating conditions for isolation rooms. These three conditions are presented in the Different Forms and Boundaries Relative to Other Types section below. [Pg.1001]

Infectious communicable bioaerosols contain bacteria or virus within small droplet nuclei produced from the drying of larger liquid droplets and can transmit disease. [Pg.56]

DROPLET An airborne particle consisting primarily of liquid. Droplets are usually generated by talking, sneezing, or coughing, and while some settle out almost immediately, many dry to become DROPLET NUCLEI which add significant numbers of microorganisms to the air. [Pg.372]

Influenza usually begins in the community and, like respiratory syncytial virus, spreads to the hospital from infected patients, staff, or visitors (2,174). Influenza is spread person to person by large droplet nuclei introduced into the respiratory tract of close contacts, but direct contact transmission may also occur. Closed units such as nursing homes, chronic disease facilities, intensive care units, and pediatric wards predispose to increased risk.
