Deprived of their substrate in severe or prolonged hypoxia, some ATPase-driven systems, including ion pumps, may become impaired. Further, with the decrease in the availability of O2 as its terminal electron acceptor, the mitochondrial transport chain becomes increasingly unable to accept reducing equivalents from cellular metabolic processes. Hence the intracellular pH falls, subjecting the cell as a whole to a reductive stress and favouring those enzyme systems with acid pH optima. [Pg.100]

Besides the inherent lateral natural frequency characteristic, compressors are also influenced by torsional natural frequencies. All torsionally flexible drive trains are subject to non-steady or oscillatory excitation torques during normal operation of the system. These excitation torques can be an inherent function of either the driver or the driven equipment and, when superimposed on the normal operating torque, may appear to be of negligible concern. However, when combined with the high inertia loads of many turbomachinery trains and a torsional resonant frequency of the system, these diminutive ripples can result in a tidal wave of problems. [Pg.390]

A complete factorial experimental plan is just that, in some sense complete. It provides enough information to allow one to assess (for the particular levels used) not only individual but also joint or interaction effects of the factors on the response or responses. But when in fact (unbeknownst to the investigator) a system under study is a relatively simple one, principally driven by only a few individual or low-order joint effects of the factors, fewer data actually are needed to characterize those effects adequately.
