Other DR Processes. The other DR processes, eg, the CODIR, DRC, ACCAR, and Dav Steel processes, make up 4.4% of worldwide production and mosdy consist of coal-based, rotary-kiln processes. Ah of these are similar to the SL/RN process. In addition, one small coal-based, shaft-furnace plant based on the Kinglor-Metor process is operating. 

Sulfur is the almost universal, primary vulcanizing agent for all elastomers, whether in latex or dry form. Less sulfur is normally required for latex than for dry mbber compounds. By increasing sulfur concentration to 30—50 parts by weight (30—50 parts/100 parts dry mbber content (DRC)) in latex compound, satisfactory hard mbber articles, particularly mbber—metal coatings, are obtained. 

Films deposited from compounded nitrile latices can be vulcanized with sulfur and accelerators, assisted by relatively high levels (ca 4.0—5.0 parts /100 DRC) of ziac oxide. For other uses, nitrile latices are sometimes used ia unvulcanized form. An appHcation of medium soHds nitrile latex, eg, Nitrex J-6849 and Polysar 845, has been ia preparation of oil-resistant foams for lubricants ia heavy-duty beariags, such as railroad-car journal boxes. 

The latex may then either be concentrated to about 60% DRC, usually by centrifuging or evaporation, or alternately coagulated and dried. The two approaches lead to two quite distinct branches of rubber technology, namely latex technology and dry rubber technology.

A Q-switched Nd YAG laser (7 ns pulse duration, Quanta-Ray DRC-1A) operated at 10 Hz was used as a light source. The 1064 nm fundamental was frequency doubled to 532 nm for some experiments. In all experiments reported here a geometry was used which focused the laser beam in front of the entrance window of the sample cell such that the laser beam was diverging as it passed through the sample cell. In this geometry the laser beam was about 3 mm in diameter at the region viewed by the light detection system.

DRC [Direct reduction by coal] A direct reduction ironmaking process, using coal as the reductant. First operated in Rockwood, United States, in 1978, and now operating in two plants in South Africa and one in China. See DR.

Also irrigation with brackish and saline waters is actively explored, with teams studying plant response to irrigation at various salinity levels and implications on the soil and the environment (e.g. INCO-DC 2001 DRC 2002). Results so far achieved show that unsuspected possibilities are open for the use of large, till now neglected unconventional water resources and that traditional guidelines based on crop salinity...
